Building Trust
“I trust you.” Doesn’t it feel great when you know people trust you? Have you ever thought about how
you get someone’s trust? You can’t just tell them you are trustworthy. Trust is earned one trustworthy
deed at a time, but it can be lost very quickly. Trustworthiness means:
• Being reliable, do what you say you’ll do.
• Having the courage to do the right thing.
• Being loyal; standing by your friends
• Being honest
• Not deceiving, cheating or stealing
Honesty, promise-keeping, loyalty and integrity are four elements of trustworthiness.
• Honesty – telling the truth and doing what is right even if no one else is doing it.
• Promise-keeping – keeping your work and being dependable.
• Loyalty – Standing by, sticking up for and protecting family friends and country; being a good friend and
looking out for those who care about you.
• Integrity – being true to yourself and living up to your highest and best personal values.
As a family, spend some time talking about actions that build trust and those that tend to destroy trust. Start with
these:
• Committing to a project meeting and deciding at the last minute to not go.
• Helping with yard work without being asked.
• Promising to attend a 4-H meeting with your child but deciding to drop them off instead.
• Agreeing to be a project leader yet never having a meeting.
Keep in mind building trust is important for both adults and youth.
The Four H’s into Action
Did you know that you and your family can strengthen the fourth “H” in 4-H through a free, online
activity? If you or your parents are interested in recording and sharing important information about your
family’s health history, consider going to My Family Health Portrait at https://familyhistory.hhs.gov/.
After entering brief health data for your family members, the interactive web site instantly creates a family tree
drawing and a chart of your family health history. All information can be saved, edited later, and printed so that
users can share the health reports with other family members or the family doctor. This web site is available in
English and Spanish and is sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services.
Girls and Science
Missouri 4-H has been invited to participate in the Midwest Rural-Urban (MRU) Girls Collaborative
Project.
Approximately 35 $1000 mini-grants will be awarded to encourage collaboration between organizations to help
girls pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. While the project is targeted specifically at girls,
the supported events and activities do not need to be exclusively for girls. Many current 4-H animal science, food
science, environmental, computer, and aerospace programs are an excellent fit! New program possibilities might
include GPS, robotics, digital architecture, forensic science (CSI), digital photography and video. The settings
could be clubs, camps, after-school, or special events. The project could be for a comprehensive science event or
a science activity within a larger program.
This is a National Science Foundation supported project to encourage and foster collaborations between various
types of programs/organizations in Missouri, Kansas, and Northeastern Oklahoma that will help girls pursue
careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The collaborations could be just among 4-H
groups or larger collaborations with agencies, businesses, schools, after-school programs, and other youth groups.

speaker.
Are You Into Computers, Technology, and Science?
Missouri 4-H is recruiting delegates for the 2006 National 4-H Technology Leadership Conference, July
24-27 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The conference is for youth (14+) and adult leaders.
Participants will learn about advanced science and technology, help shape the future of 4-H sci-tech,
and learn exciting ideas for local 4-H programs. Focus areas for the conference include traditional 4-H areas like
agronomy, horticulture, animal science, food science and newer 4-H project opportunities like disaster
preparedness, geographic information systems, forensic science, robotics, architecture, engineering, fine arts, and
computers. Refer to the conference website at http://4hntc.4-h.org/ for more information about being a part of the
Missouri delegation or to receive the video from the 2004 Conference contact.

National 4-H News
4-H International Toolkit Available
National 4-H Headquarters announces the availability of a 4-H International Toolkit to assist countries
interested in creating 4-H type programs.
The 4-H International Toolkit has been created to respond to requests from other countries for assistance in
establishing 4-H type programs in their own countries. The Toolkit is an evolving resource that aids countries in
assessing needs, determining programmatic areas and responding with well rounded, positive youth development
clubs. The Toolkit is available from National 4-H Headquarters via CD-ROM, hard copy, or on our website
www.national4-hheadquarters.gov. The 4-H International Toolkit will be regularly updated with new materials as
they become available. We welcome submission of materials from State 4-H Programs with experience in
partnering with other countries.
At this time, copies of the toolkit have been sent out to Pakistan, Ghana, Serbia and Montenegro, Grenada, and the
Rand Corp. for possible use in Iraq and Afghanistan. More countries have expressed interest in 4-H programs and
how such programs may possibly fit into their nation’s support of their youth. We are also encouraging partnerships
between interested countries and state and local 4-H Programs domestically. Please let us know if your state may
have interest in such a partnership.
For more information about the Toolkit, to submit a resource, or to indicate interest in a partnership, contact Joey
DeMarco, program specialist, National 4-H Headquarters, CSREES, USDA at jdemarco@csrees.usda.gov or 202-
720-2088.

Memorial Contributions
After discussing it with Brocke, the Cole County 4-H Council has decided to start an end-of-year award for
members of the Horsemanship projects. Brocke’s dad loved riding his horses and thought this would be more
appropriate than planting a tree or flowers. If you would like to contribute to this fund, please make checks payable
to the Cole County 4-H Council and put Laws Memorial in the Memo field.

Feb. 25th Practice Horse Judging session on Saturday, February 25 at the Equine Education Celebration at
Boone County Fairgrounds 3 miles north of Columbia, Missouri.

This is intended to give youth and adults an opportunity to practice judging horses in a contest setting, yet without
the burden of competing so they can explore their interest in the event. It's perfect for youth that are interested, but
aren't experienced enough yet to give oral reasons. Of course any teams that wish to hone their skills before the
State 4-H Horse Judging on March 4 are also welcome. MU Student Stacy Craighead will be placing and giving
reasons on these classes. Stacy is also assisting Ben Gallup with the State 4-H Horse Judging, but we will be
using different horses.
This would make an excellent horse project meeting in itself, however there will be a great number of opportunities
for learning throughout the day as Susan Harris will be presenting "The Visible Horse" where she paints the skeletal
system on one side of a white horse and the musculature on the on the other side then puts the horse through his
gaits while she describes how the muscles and bones work. In addition there will be a demonstration on training
the Western Pleasure Horse in the morning and breed presentations & educational seminars throughout the day.
