                       MHBA ANNUAL CURLING BONSPIEL:
                             A ROARING SUCCESS
On Friday, March 12, thirty-two teams took to the ice at the Heather Curling Club. This was a fun-filled day for all par-
ticipants. The final draw was exciting as the two top teams, Manitoba Hydro and Building Supplies of Canada Ltd played
one another. Building Supplies emerged as the winner but when points were all added up the winner was the team from
Kitchen Craft Cabinetry. Congratulations!

Thank you to the Winnipeg Free Press who sponsored a great roast beef lunch; to all of our ice sponsors; to all those who
donated a fabulous array of prizes, and particularly to JELD-WEN Windows & Doors who had Jennifer Jones and Jill Of-
ficer visit the club house over lunch hour. The girls were a real hit as they mingled among the guests and exchanged curl-
ing stories. They are off to the Worlds in Swift Current this week and we wish them well.

Jennifer and Jill brought an autographed jersey from the 2009 Worlds which was auctioned off with the proceeds going to
Habitat For Humanity. The winner was Ray Straker from Gentek.

Thank you to the following companies
   who sponsored this fun event!

                                    PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
March is an amazingly busy month for the Manitoba Home Builders Association, but also a very
good time. The 2010 Spring Parade of Homes has been a tremendous event to date. This unseasona-
bly warm weather has brought consumers out in droves to visit our 95 superb show homes. Reviews
have been great from all sources. The builders have been elated with not just the traffic, but also the
quality of traffic. The developers have been happy with the apparent need for growth and expansion.
Suppliers have been happy with the visibility that their products have been getting. Most of all, con-
sumers are happy with the superior product on display and the state of their financial position. Our
goal now is to keep this momentum going throughout the entire year.

The MHBA is presenting the Home Expressions Show this Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Winnipeg
Convention Centre. This consumer show annually attracts over 20,000 visitors and is a must see rite of Spring for
Manitobans. We encourage all MHBA members to bring friends and family to the show.

The Curling Bonspiel last Friday at the Heather was another spectacular event with a full house of 128 curlers. It was
great to have Jennifer Jones and Jill Officer join us at lunch.

Earlier this month, the MHBA was well represented at the Canadian Home Builders Association Annual Meetings and
participated fully in the discussion of such items as Government Imposed Charges for development costs, land use
regulations that are impacting housing costs, projected interest rates and the creation of city master plans.

Keep writing those offers from the Parade of Homes and we look forward to seeing you at the Home Expressions
Show this weekend.
                   CONSTRUCTION CAREER EXPOSITION
The Education & Training Committee is participating in the Construction Career Symposium at the Red River Exhibi-
tion grounds on May 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This symposium is to promote careers in construction to stu-
dents and youth. With the increasing skilled trades shortage, this is the time to introduce students to the variety of skilled
trade occupations available in the construction industry!

The MHBA will enter three projects in the form of three identical garden sheds. Students in the carpentry training
course will build one shed to full frame. One shed will be ready for erection while the third shed will be only precut
components. The career seminar will be interactive with students being allowed to try hands on work.

We require TWO individuals per shed for approximately 7 hours for a total of SIX persons for full time or in
shifts. Those individuals should have the capacity to help and direct students in window/door installation, installation
of exterior finishes as well as some with the knowledge and ability to direct students in the assembly of prefab compo-
nents and complete framing. Students must also be made aware of the safety requirements to ensure no one gets injured
on the site.

We would like individuals to be willing to speak to the benefits of a career in the residential construction industry. It
would be beneficial to have both male and female instructors.

If you are able to contribute some of your time, contact Gerry Koersvelt at 960-0093 or gerryk@blanketltd.ca; Jamin
Braun at 925-2564 or jbraun@homebuilders.mb.ca; or Janet Constable at 925-2578 or jconstable@homebuilders.mb.ca

At the conclusion of the event the three sheds will be donated to Habitat For Humanity.

Our thanks to McMunn & Yates and JELD-WEN Windows and Doors for their donation of supplies.
