1. Introduction

Over the years, as the Internet has grown and expanded, website developers had
tried very hard to make more unique and good website for user to read. There are
many website developers that tried many ways to improve their website by set
different sizes of text, different colors of text, graphics, tables, animations,
    frames, etc.

Why to use frames or not to use frames? Frames used to be dangerous proposition
because early browsers do not support their display. Furthermore, even though
now 99% of people use frames-compatible browsers, frames can still cause a lot
of trouble (Thomason, 2000). Frames also allow authors to present documents in
multiple views. Multiple views offer designers a way to keep certain information
visible, while other views are scrolled or replaced. There is frequent debate in the
e-commerce world regarding the preferred approaches to website design and
online business. For example, some web designers prefer to set up their websites
with frames while others believe frames should never be used.

In this report, I will discuss mainly about frames. What is the difference between
a frame-based website and a website that does not use frames? What are the
arguments for and against using frames? Furthermore, this report will help you to
decide whether or not to use frames

                                                                                      3
2. Difference between Frames and no-Frames based
website

  2.1 Frames based website

Frames based website is a website that uses frames in their HTML document. By
using frames, we can display more than one HTML document in the same
browser window. Each HTML document is called a frame, each frame is
independent. Basically, user can browse to different pages on one frame while the
other content of frames remains the same.

2.1.1 Advantages and Disadvantages of frames based website

    Advantages of frames based website:

 Frames have constant navigation menu that be visible all the time that
make your web site easier to navigate.
 Frames are quicker to download because visitors do not have to download
each time a visitor looks at a new page.
 Frames based website is easier to maintain. For example: if you have big
website that contain a lot of pages and you want to add new pages, with
frames you can easily add links in navigational menu without having
trouble adding links on each and every pages.
 Frames can make your site more interesting and resolved some design
issues because frames can place banner, navigation bar, graphic, etc in a
static frame that is always displayed.

    Disadvantages of frames based website:

 Not all browsers support frames.
 Frames usually have problems with search engine as frames makes search
engines may not be able to properly spider a framed site.
 Frames can make it difficult for you to direct people to a particular page
           on your site.
 Frames within frames are usually confused visitor when they browse
           through frames-based website.
 Frames can not be bookmarked because only the main page of the website
           can be bookmarked.
 Frames-based website is more difficult to print because it confused
browsers to choose which frame to send to the printer.

                                                                                    4
  2.2 No-Frames based website

No-Frames based website is basically a common website design that uses by all
website developers as no-frames do not annoy the site visitor. However, no-
frames based website only displays one HTML page on each page.

2.2.1 Advantages and Disadvantages of No-frames based
    website

    Advantages of No-frames based website:

 No-frames based website is support by all browsers.
        Make search engines easier
        Can be bookmarked easily
 Do not have trouble with printing

    Disadvantages of No-frames based website:

 No-frames based website is longer to download because they include same
amount of coding in each pages.
 No-frames based website is more harder to maintain and design
 Huge amount of code will be needed that can confused the site author to
maintain or update the web site.

3. Argument for and against frames
Nowadays, there are many discussions in forums, chat room, etc that for
and against the frames. I have found several example of people’s argument in the
internet that will help us understand more what people’s opinion of frames. This
argument started by someone that creates new topics in forums that says “Why
don't you like frames or iframes?” (http://www.ozzu.com/ftopic1711.html).

                                                                                  5
3.1 Argument for frames

Frames can give us many benefit depend what we are trying to accomplish. The
argument below shows that some people agree that frames are a benefit in some
situations.

“About frames... used properly, they can be of great benefit. It lets you
separate functional elements out and process them totally separately. It means
you can have the browser cache elements and never have to reload them, this is
particularly important of your site's top banner and/or navigation is on the heavy
side.” (http://www.ozzu.com/ftopic1711.html)

“If a site is designed properly, as ATNO/TW said, there is no problem
with them. Most people don't even realize frames are there on a well designed
site.” (http://www.ozzu.com/ftopic1711.html)

With this argument, we can conclude that not all of them hate the frames
itself, but the designer’s lack of skill in developing the website.

3.2 Argument against frames

Frames give user hard time to browse through the website because few
browsers cannot deal with frames. According to this forum, I have seen several
people that hate frames more than they like it. Here is several argument that
against frames which I found in this forum.

“If you use iframes, or even frames, which are about to be deprecated, you
should be shot, and forbidden from making "WebPages".

“Generally speaking, on the World Wide Web, frames can never used
appropriately.” (http://www.ozzu.com/ftopic1711.html)

This forum shows us people’s real life experience when they use frames.
Furthermore, people use frames for different reasons because some of them found
frames is useful.

                                                                                 6
4. Examples of site that use frames
This is an example of site that uses both of frames and flash
(http://www.evanstylez.com/). This website has used very attractive way of
design for visitors so that they can easily navigate through the web without having

5. Examples of site that does not use frames
This is an example of site that does not use frames. This is a good example of e-
commerce business (www.ebay.com.au) because it sells many varieties of items
online. Furthermore, this website provides visitors with good security so that
making eBay a safe and reliable place to trade.

                           T1 1.44Mbps 5.61 seconds

6. Conclusion
In my conclusion, I will say that we cannot choose which one the best
between no frames and frames because frames also have advantages over no-
frames. In my research, I have found that some people also like to use frames in
their website because they find frames is useful in some way because with frames
you can easily maintain and design a website. In example of frame website that I
had give above (http://www.evanstylez.com/), it shows that the website author
can develop such an attractive frame-based website by using combination of flash
and frame. Furthermore, frames-based website is quicker to read because it does
not use a lot of code in their HTML document and frames is easier to learn for the
beginners. I personally like frames because it gives us more efficient way to
navigate through the website and I think frames is very useful when we use it to
make photo gallery in our website.

                                                                                   10
