"SAMPLE CAREER DEVELOPMENT PLANS"
APPENDIX B SAMPLE CAREER DEVELOPMENT PLANS Dr. X has demonstrated a consistent interest in a variety of areas of biological research. This environment is well suited to his interests in ____________. He will receive mentoring and assistance from the existing faculty in mid or senior career development, in particular Dr. M, who has served as Dr. X’s mentor since 2001. Dr. X does not require any start up funding, however, the Department is prepared to assist him as necessary in grant submissions and management. Dr. W will be expected to engage in original research and develop an independent career leading to further promotion within the research track. He will receive feedback based on an annual review that is performed for all faculty in the department. Dr. W. will continue to receive mentoring from Dr. L, who in addition will provide space and other resources for the conduct of his research as he establishes independent funding. He will also have contact with many other faculty in our Department and School for his continued growth at the University. Dr. R will have sufficient protected time to conduct her research. Dr. F will continue to serve as Dr. R’s primary mentor, assisting Dr. R by identifying appropriate sources of research funding, assisting with grant and manuscript preparation. Her space is currently shared with her mentor, in an 1800 sq. foot laboratory in the CCGC Building. Over time, as her research expands, dedicated space will be allocated to her within this shared lab, commensurate with the level of her independent research requirements and funding. Dr. F will continue to serve as Dr. R’s primary mentor. Dr. F will also facilitate Dr. R’s membership and participation in professional societies and meetings. Dr. R will be given many opportunities to participate with other department faculty to expand her teaching role. Dr. A has two mentors, Dr. B and Dr. C. While she conducts research with both Drs. B and C, she has protected time to pursue her own interests. Her mentors provide both full salary and laboratory operating support. Dr. B will guide Dr. A’s efforts in monoclonal antibodies. Dr. C. will provide assistance and mentoring in developing new methodology in the proteomic array area, using chip technology. These two mentoring arrangements will position Dr. A along the path to becoming a successful, independent scientist. 5/05
