POP QUIZZES:                 The instructor reserves the right to administer pop quizzes at any time during the term, and
                             at any time during a class session. The length and timing of these quizzes will be

ORAL PRESENTATIONS:          From time to time, students may be required to present their asynchronous assignments to

JOURNALS:                    Journals are one-page summaries of criminal justice-related current events. Spelling,
                             grammar, punctuation, etc. count. Examples of possible journal topics include: court
                             cases, newspaper articles, judicial confirmation hearings, legislative sessions (criminal law
                             bills, etc.), release of law enforcement or correctional research, etc. Journals are due at
                             the beginning of class. Two journals are due during the term.

LIBRARY ASSIGNMENT (S):   Internet, newspapers, books, journals, as required to supplement class lectures and other
                          course requirements as necessary.

                          For link to online bibliographic and research resources go to the AIU Media Center at
                          http://www.cecybrary.com. Students are to also visit and familiarize themselves with the
                          Criminal Justice, A Brief Introduction companion websites:

                          familiar with the website at http://www.cybrary.info. Most of the learning team and
                          asynchronous assignments will come from these online resources.

                          Students without a computer may use computers in the University’s Library and Learning
                          Lab or computers at public libraries to complete the asynchronous assignments.

                          Additionally, copies of the Library Extra assignments have been printed and bound, and
                          are available at the Circulation Desk of the AIU Dunwoody Campus Library.

AIU M EDIA CENTER USAGE    Students with valid AIU IDs are encouraged to use the Campus Media Center to conduct
AND RESEARCH SUPPORT :     research. The research database, GALILEO, may be accessed from the website:
                           HTTP://WWW.GALILEO.PEACHNET .EDU. Passwords for access to GALILEO change
                           periodically, but can be obtained from the Library at 404-965-5767.

DUE DATES & M AKE-UP       Due Dates
WORK:                               Asynchronous assignments are due in class at the beginning of the class
                           session the week immediately following the date of assignment. Journals are due at
                           the beginning of class. Asynchronous assignments & journals received after that
                           time will receive a grade of 0%. No exceptions. Students are advised to print their
                           assignments out before the beginning of the class period. Students are expected to
                           complete all class assignments whether or not they are in attendance. Assignments
                           submitted to the instructor by assigned deadlines (whether in person, via a classmate, e-
                           mail, or other means) will be acceptable even if the student is not in attendance.
                           Make-Up Assignments
                                    Students absent without prior notice on days when quizzes (including pop quizzes)
                           or examinations are administered will receive a grade of zero for that quiz or examination,
                           and will not be permitted to make-up the quiz or examination.

This Course Outline includes by reference both the Student Handbook and the instructor’s “Rules &
Regulations” as amended from time to time. Students should be certain to obtain a printed copy of the
Handbook, as well as those “Rules & Regulations” at the beginning of the school term. The “Rules &

Attendance
          Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory, as is prompt arrival. Class begins at the scheduled hour.
Once in the classroom, students should remain except during class breaks. Entering and exiting the classroom at
other times is prohibited. The campus attendance policy is detailed on Page 12 of the student handbook.
Attendance at team learning sessions is required. Each student is expected to be present, on time, and prepared for
each team learning session. In case it needs to be said, sleeping in class is inappropriate and students will be woken
or, if necessary, asked to leave the class.
          Students missing more than one class per term are subject to a deduction of 10% from their course average
for each successive absence. Students needing to withdraw from a course may do so by arrangement with an
Academic Adviser and during the drop/add period.

Cell Phones, Laptop Computers & Musical Devices
          The use of cell phones in class is prohibited (for voice or text communication). Out of respect for the class,
cell phones should be turned off or put into silent mode before entering the classroom. If it’s necessary to answer a
call, the student should exit the classroom to take the call. The use of cell phones during testing is prohibited.
          Laptop computers may be used in the classroom for course-related purposes only. Laptops may only be
used during testing to display classroom notes. The use of laptops to access the Internet or electronic mail during
testing is strictly prohibited. This is a zero tolerance policy, and violation will result in a grade of 0% on the test.
          The use of musical devices (CD players, MP3 players, etc.) is not permitted during class or team time.
Students may use these devices during class breaks, but only with headphones.

Contacting the Instructor
         Email is the preferred method of contact, however assignments may be left for the instructor either his
office (Room 202 of the 500 Building) or in the appropriate mailbox in the faculty offices (Room 119 of the 500
Building). The instructor’s email addresses are: mbshapir@bellsouth.net and mshapiro@aiuniv.edu.
         If submitting an assignment to the instructor via email, please note that the instructor responds to ALL
email as a way of advising the student that the message or material has been received. If a reply email is not
received from the instructor within 24 hours, it should be assumed that the instructor did NOT receive the original
message or any attachments to same. Care should be taken to ensure that a correct email address is used. It is the
STUDENT’S responsibility to ensure that assignments are received in a timely fashion.

Dress Code
         Since students at AIU are preparing for life in the working world, appropriate dress is both expected and
required. “Business casual” attire is expected. Except for religious headwear or for medical reasons, hats or other
head coverings are prohibited. Students should dress as if they were in the work place. While this does not require
“coat and tie” wardrobe, it should be borne in mind that campus is a place of learning, not a recreational area.

Due Dates
         In the business world, tasks are given specific due dates which cannot be altered. Failure to complete a job
within the time frame may result in the loss of a customer or even a job. It is critical that all due dates be met.
         All asynchronous assignments are due in class at the beginning of the class session the week immediately
following the date of assignment. Assignments received after that time will receive a grade of 0%. No exceptions.
Students are advised to print their assignments out before the beginning of the class period. Similarly, journals
(when assigned) are due at the beginning of class for use during Team Time. Journals submitted after that time will
receive a grade of 0%. No exceptions. Absence from class does not change the due date of class assignments.
         Students absent without prior notice on days when quizzes or examinations are administered will receive a
grade of zero for that quiz or examination. There will be no make-up quizzes or examinations for students absent
without prior notification.

Make-Up Assignments
          Students are expected to complete all class assignments whether or not they are in attendance.
Assignments submitted to the instructor by assigned deadlines (whether in person, via a classmate, via e-mail, via
fax, or via other means) will be acceptable even if the student is not in attendance. No assignments will be accepted
after the due date, and the student’s grade will be marked as zero (0%).

Team & Asynchronous Assignments
          The course outline lists all possible Team and Asynchronous Assignments. It is possible that some of the
assignments will not be distributed. Therefore, please wait until the instructor makes an assignment (whether Team
or Asynchronous) before beginning that assignment. Except for journals, assignments must be typewritten in 12
point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1" margins on all sides. Neither a cover page nor a report cover
is required, however the student’s name, course number and class meeting day must appear at the top of the first
page of the assignment. Asynchronous assignments are geared to the course work. Therefore, these assignments
must be completed contemporaneously with the course work. As noted in the section “Due Dates,” asynchronous
assignments will not be accepted after the due date & time, and will be graded a zero (0%).

Journal
         Students must keep abreast of criminal justice related news. Twice during the term, students will read one
criminal justice related article from a media source (print or Internet), such as the Atlanta-Journal Constitution
(www.ajc.com), CNN (www.cnn.com) or CourtTV (www.courttv.com) and write a one-page summary
(approximately 200 words) about the case or legislative proposal, etc.
         Journals are due at the beginning of the class session. Grading will consist of accuracy to the article read,
as well as proper grammar, punctuation, spelling and structure.

Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty
          Plagiarism is taking someone else’s work and claiming it as your own. It is both academic fraud & theft.
          Plagiarism is cutting and pasting different commentary and claiming it as your own. If a student takes large
sections of articles verbatim and puts quotes around them, this is also plagiarism. Although the student gave credit
where credit was due, that is hardly a contribution, nor does it show the student’s original work. Their grade will be
lowered accordingly. When a student writes a paper, that student should never quote more then three sentences at a
time. It is important to paraphrase the information into your own words.
          All papers will be run through a plagiarism detector that has a database of 10 million articles and term
papers. The detector looks for plagiarism and reports where and why it found it.
          The key to avoiding plagiarism is to remember the following: if it isn’t common knowledge and your idea,
you must credit the source. Plagiarism, such as verbatim copying from reading assignments or the Internet and
manifesting same as original work will result in a grade of zero on the assignment and will be reported to the Dean
of the School of Criminal Justice and the Vice-President of Academic Affairs. THE INSTRUCTOR HAS A “ZERO
TOLERANCE” POLICY REGARDING PLAGIARISM & ACADEMIC DISHONESTY.
          Please reference AIU catalog, “Statement on Academic Honesty” and the student handbook.

Quiz & Examination Policy
          All quizzes and examinations are “open note, open book.” While this means that a student is free to use his
or her classroom notes and the course textbook, students may not use or refer to prior quizzes or examinations, nor
may they access online resources via computer, cellular phone or any other electronic device. Violation of this
policy in any way will result in a grade of zero for the quiz or examination. See also the section “Due Dates”.

Grade Appeals
         Students have the right to appeal a course grade that they believe to be inappropriate. Any student desiring
to appeal a grade should be aware of the time constraints, and consult both the University “portal” and Student
Handbook for the procedure.

A Final Word: Pay Attention to Details
          Whether it’s completing an asynchronous assignment or interpreting questions in quizzes & examinations,
read the information carefully and follow the instructions. Part of what you’re learning, and will be graded on, is
attention to detail.

                                  Attendance Policy (Effective May 1, 2004)

The goal of AIU-Dunwoody is to provide students with learning experiences that will assist them in reaching
their dreams of a degree and a career. Students are expected to perform as professionals in their respective
fields, which includes reporting to work regularly, on time, and prepared to contribute.

Research has shown that student attendance is directly related to success within a course. Students who
attend and actively participate in a class are more likely to succeed. To this end, American InterContinental
University – Dunwoody has adopted the following attendance policy:

        Continuing students adding classes during the drop/add week are subject to a late registration fee if
         they have not registered prior to this period.

        When a student is marked absent for 2 consecutive scheduled classes of the registered course, a
         warning indicating that further absences may result in failure in the respective course will be sent. The
         student will be directed to contact the respective faculty member prior to the next class. It is the
         students’ responsibility to monitor his/her attendance in each course.

        When a student is marked absent for 3 consecutive scheduled classes of the registered course,
         he/she will be automatically dropped withdraw failing. The instructor may consider extenuating
         circumstances (including contact with the instructor, status in the course, and documentation of
         emergency absences) in determining the student’s status in the course and can request your
         reinstatement back into the course. Guidelines for such consideration must be included in the course
         syllabus.

        Late arrivals (tardiness) or early departures from classes will be counted, on a prorated basis, in
         course absences. The instructor must identify how these absences will be counted in the course.

        As learning cannot take place when the student is absent, the university does not differentiate between
         “excused” and “unexcused” absences. A student is either in attendance or absent. However, students
         are encouraged to contact faculty prior to any absence.

        Students are responsible for any missed work when absent. In addition, the student is expected to be
         prepared for class upon his/her return.

        Students who stop attending a class without officially withdrawing are considered in violation of the
         attendance policy and will receive the appropriate grade, which may include a grade of “F.”

        At the discretion of the respective faculty member, class participation, not attendance, may be included
         in the course grade. However, students who are absent from class will typically have lower
         participation grades, as a student cannot contribute to the learning environment when absent.

        Students requesting a grade of Incomplete must follow the established guidelines as identified in the
         College Catalog or the Student Handbook.


                                               Withdrawal Policy

Any student who does not attend class for 15 calendar days without making verbal or written arrangements
with Charmin Brooks in the Student Affairs Department at 404-965-6449 or clbrooks@aiuniv.edu will be
withdrawn from the University and will not be eligible for reentry until the beginning of the next term.

     Tuition Costs
     Academic Progress
