Career Pathway Template Information Sheet Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) have produced one statewide format to present secondary to postsecondary career pathways or programs of study. The new template described below has been adopted by both VCCS and VDOE and will serve as a statewide template for career pathways collaboratively developed by school divisions, community colleges, and business and industry. All future Career Pathways submitted by Tech Prep, Postsecondary Perkins and Secondary Perkins should be developed using this new template. Current Career Pathways or programs of study should be revised in accordance with this template as soon as it is feasible to revise them. Henceforward, all career pathways or programs of study that are submitted in hard copy or electronically to the VCCS for review should follow this new format. VCCS and VDOE are posting sample career pathways using the new statewide format on their respective web sites. Eventually, there will be one sample pathway posted for each of the 16 Career Clusters. Each pathway sample has three documents that can be used by local career pathway teams to develop their local pathways. The first document is an information page for the cluster, which provides helpful information and guidelines to use with developing any of the pathways within that cluster. For the initial sample pathways, VDOE has selected secondary level CTE completer sequences that are appropriate for each pathway based on internal review. VCCS has selected diploma programs, certificate programs and Associate degree programs based on the national classification of Instructional Programs (CIPS) cross‐ correlation with career clusters. The second document is a sample pathway within that cluster. VDOE has selected high school course sequences that are available at the state level, and VCCS has chosen an associate degree from a representative community college that matches up with the high school courses. Local school divisions and community colleges are empowered to make changes to the sample pathways provided. Local career pathway teams should identify which courses are offered in their schools and colleges and develop an appropriate pathway for their specific service area. The third document is a blank pathway that local pathway teams can use to complete the pathway. If Tech Prep Directors have any questions about how to use the new forms, please contact Scott Kemp at skemp@vccs.edu. These forms were developed, not only to reduce confusion about which form to use, but to minimize redundancy of effort since, last year, school divisions and Tech Prep practitioners were using different forms. In practice, personnel who manage secondary Perkins, postsecondary Perkins and Tech Prep should get together to develop, support, and promote appropriate pathways for each region.
