In order to attract and retain increased numbers of research higher degree students it is necessary to have an efficient infrastructure in place to support their
recruitment and retention. The details of this infrastructure are contained in the Research Procedures of the Faculty of Commerce. In summary, the Faculty will:
Increase the number of research higher degree graduates who contribute to the University and Faculty research plan
Ensure that the proposed research project is appropriate for the award, with a priority on projects that relate to one or more of the Theme areas.
Prepare and distribute postgraduate material that sets out the conditions, milestones and monitoring procedures for undertaking postgraduate research within the
Faculty by December 2002.
Foster a supportive environment for research students.
Ensure that procedures are in place to select the most appropriate supervisor(s) or supervisory panel for the research project, within the context of University policy.
Ensure that high quality supervision is provided continuously throughout the research period.
Provide appropriate opportunities for students to develop their presentational skills.
Set in place procedures for a formal review of the research proposals of RHD students by the end of December 2002. For doctoral candidates the detailed research
proposal should be presented preferably after six months, but not later than one year after first registration. For masters by research candidates the research proposal
should be presented normally after three months, but not later than six months after first registration. A report on this review must be lodged with the Office for
Research and placed on the student’s file.
Ensure compliance with the University’s policy on intellectual property.
