Excess salt is a major cause of high blood pressure. It may damage the heart, kidneys, and other organs above and beyond its effect on blood pressure. By cutting sodium out of the average American's daily diet, one could prevent up to 92,000 deaths and 66,000 strokes every year. And it could keep up to 99,000 Americans from having a heart disease every year. Here, Liebman discusses how and why Americans need to cut salt on their daily diet.
