Sample Worksite Policy
Aerobic exercise and other health improvement activities can be a significant factor in
preventing disease and improving one's outlook on life. Some studies document that
increased energy generated by aerobic exercise increases employee productivity. Therefore,
in order to encourage employee participation in exercise and other health enhancing
activities, the following policy is issued.
It is the policy of _______________________________ that activities and events
sponsored or supported by this organization will include opportunities for physical
• Physical Activity Breaks In Meetings
Examples include facilitated activities such as stretch breaks or icebreakers.
• Supplemental Funding towards Health Clubs
Example includes if the employee utilizes the health club a minimum number of
times per month.
• Identification of Physical Activity Opportunities
Examples include provision of map with walking routes and local attractions,
identification of recreational and exercise facilities, and organization of walking
groups and other group activities.
• Supportive Schedules to Allow Physical Activities
Examples include flexible work schedules and modified meal breaks to allow
• Encouragement from Group Leadership to Engage in Physical Activity
Examples include employee leadership promoting physical activity, including the
use of stairwells, and being role models.
• Designation of Space for Wellness Activities
Example includes having designated office space available for exercise and
• On Site Wellness–Related Vendors
Example includes allowing service providers, such as a weight management
program, to offer programs to employees at the worksite during non-work hours
(i.e. during lunch hours, or before or after the official workday of the employee).
• Exercise Time Policy
With the written approval of the supervisor, employees who wish to exercise
during the work day may be granted thirty minutes per day, for a maximum of
three times per week∗.
