                           The 2007 Camus Climate Survey
                                           Summary

Campus Climate Survey Methodology

During the Fall 2007 semester we selected 100 classes utilizing a stratified sampling
method. The instructors of the selected classes were then contacted and asked to participate in
an in class Campus Climate survey. 85 of those class instructors responded to our request
indicating that they would participate in our survey, out of which 74 ultimately did participate.

The selected sample included classes from across every department and the sampled students
consisted of 5% of the total enrollment for each department. We also divided the sample size
between lower and upper level courses evenly within each department.

A total of 2,043 questionnaires were distributed with 1,293 of those returned for a response rate
of 63%.

The response rate as broken down by college was as follows:

College
Arts and Letters 17.8%
Business 11.3%
Education 5.2%
Engineering and Computer Sciences 5.5%
Health and Human Services 21.7%
Natural Sciences and Mathematics 10.9%
Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies 22.8%

The respondents were also representative of the Fall 2007 Sac State student body in terms of
the distribution of age, gender, ethnicity and class level.

General Findings

Classroom Experiences (Questions 1 - 7)
       • In general, students do not think that their professors regularly raise issues relating
to race, gender, or international events for discussion in class (68% averaged
response). Furthermore, 73% of the respondents stated that they rarely discussed
issues relating to diversity in class during the last year.
       • However, most students feel very comfortable discussing such issues in class when
they have the opportunity to do so ( 70% averaged response). Among those issues,
they are least comfortable discussing and debating sexual orientation and/or religion
         (63%).
       • A majority of students “agree” that professors are equally supportive of all students
(80%) in terms of gender, ethnicity, age and disability.

Campus Climate
Discussing Opinions and Issues: Comfort (Questions 8 - 9)
     • Most students are not completely comfortable discussing conflicting opinions or
race/ethnic issues with administration, faculty, or staff. They are, however,
comfortable discussing conflicting opinions (74%) and racial/ethnic issues (64%) with
         other students.

       Campus Emphasis (Question 10 - 11)
       • There appears to be a gap between students’ expectations and reality regarding our
campus climate. The largest gap is in relation to the “sense of community on
campus.” 75% of the respondents think that Sac State should place an emphasis on
“promoting a sense of community”, but only 39% think that the University actually
         focuses attention on this issue.

Opportunity for Campus Dialogue (Questions 12 - 13)
       • Most students feel that there are not many opportunities for structured dialogue to
take place regarding social issues (e.g. age, disability, foreign nationality, gender,
race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious or spiritual beliefs) at Sac State (90%).
Specifically, dialogue in relation to race/ethnicity decreased significantly from 2003
          (22%) to 2007 (15%).
       • Conversely, only 33% of the respondents stated that they valued structured dialogue
regarding these same issues within their major.

       Campus Organizations (Questions 14 - 15)
       • A majority of the survey’s respondents were not aware of the activities or services
sponsored by campus organizations relating to specific groups (90%), although 35%
of them do value those types of events or activities. However, it would appear that
students have become less interested in such activities as the percentage of positive
responses in 2007 (35%) is significantly lower than those from 2003 (39%).

Insensitive Behavior (Questions 16-17)
       • A majority of students indicated that they “never or “rarely” see or hear insensitive
behaviors or disparaging remarks directed toward others (88%).

Sac State Office of Institutional Research 2
       • Most students have “never” been personally harassed or discriminated against on
campus; but for those that have, “Political views” were the primary reason they were
          harassed or discriminated against (5%).
Group and Inter-group Relations (Question 18 - 20)
      • A majority of students “agree” that a diverse campus community enhances the
educational experience of all students and the professional experience of all faculty
and staff (74%). However, the number of positive responses in 2007 was
significantly lower than those recorded in 2003 (79%).
      • 46% of the students would be comfortable officially reporting sexist, racist or other
discriminatory behaviors. However, most students do not have a thorough
understanding of how to officially report racist, sexist, and other discriminatory or
          offensive behaviors (70%).
      • Most students feel that getting to know others of different racial ethnic groups on
campus is easy (56%). The number of respondents who “agree” that people at Sac
State tended to stay within their own “clique” or racial/ethnic group is much lower
than those surveyed in 2003 (43% vs. 55%).
      • A majority of students do not feel pressured to date within their racial/ethnic group or
socialize within their group, and they do not feel excluded if they choose not to
participate in campus activities related to their group (97%).
      • Most students are comfortable relating to faculty, staff and students who are different
          than them (74%).

Interests and Activities (Questions 21 - 22)
        • Most students (73%) do not have a great deal of interest in issues related to age,
disability, foreign nationality, gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious or
spiritual beliefs. Of these, they have the most interest in racial/ethnic issues (36%).
        • The vast majority of students are not actively involved in issues related to age,
disability, foreign nationality, gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious or
spiritual beliefs (only 7% of the students are actively involved in such issues). Of
these activities, they are most involved in religious/spiritual beliefs or affiliations
           (11%).

Conclusions

The top three aspects of the university with the highest ratings were:

The Equality of Faculty Encouragement and Responsiveness - 80%
Comfortable Interacting with Faculty, Staff and Students Different from You - 74%
Comfortable Discussing and Debating Diversity Issues in Class - 70%

When comparing the survey results from 2007 administration of the Campus Climate survey
with the findings from the 2003 administration the findings are remarkable similar with very few
exceptions. The most notable change was a decrease in value with regard to the activities,
events, and services sponsored by on campus associations which are specific to diverse groups
(Question 15).
