									                        MAJOR CRIME CATEGORIES USED IN
                    SUBSTATION & PATROL DISTRICT CRIME LISTS

PART I CRIMES:
• MURDER, HOMICIDE : The willful (non negligent) killing of one human being by another.
• FORCIBLE RAPE : The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will. Attempts to
   commit rape by force or threat of force are also included; however, statutory rape (without force) and
   other sex offenses are excluded. [Those are included in part 2 crimes]
• ROBBERY : The taking or attempt to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a
   person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear.
• ASSAULT : The unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or
   aggravated bodily injury. (Aggravated assault is usually accompanied by the use of a weapon or by
   means likely to produce death or great bodily harm.) [Substation and Patrol District Tables also include
   “Simple (non-injury) Assaults” in these numbers.]
• BURGLARY : The unlawful entry of a structure to commit a felony or theft. (The use of force is not
   required to classify an offense as burglary.)
• LARCENY : (THEFT) The unlawful taking, carrying, leading, or riding away of property from the
   possession on constructive possession of another. It includes such crimes as shoplifting, pocket-
   picking, purse-snatching, thefts of motor vehicle parts or accessories, bicycle thefts, etc., in which no
   use of force, violence, or fraud occurs. [Note: Substation and Patrol District tables list Burglary
   Vehicle as a separate column.]
• BURGLARY VEHICLE : Thefts from motor vehicles.
• MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT : The theft or attempted theft of a motor vehicle, include the stealing of
   automobiles, trucks, busses, motorcycles, motor scooters, snowmobiles, etc.

PART II CRIMES:
• Stalking: Stalking and intimidation are in this category. [“simple assault” is included in Major
   Crimes.]
• Forgery and Counterfeiting: [Substation data: mostly forged check reports from businesses.]
• Fraud: [Substation data: mostly bad checks, plus other fraudulent attempts to obtain money by false
   pretenses.]
• Criminal Mischief: Willful or malicious destruction, injury, disfigurement, or defacement of any
   property, without consent of owner.
• Graffiti: Criminal mischief involving marking, painting, drawing, etc. on property without consent.
• Weapons: Carrying, Possessing, etc. : Weapons offenses, regulatory in nature. [Substation data:
   mostly “unlawful carrying”, etc.]
• Prostitution and Commercialized Vice.
• Sex Offenses: (Except Forcible Rape and Prostitution). [Substation data: includes all Sexual Assaults
   not counted in the Part I Forcible Rape category, plus various
• Lewdness offenses, such as Indecent Exposure, etc.]
• Drug Abuse Violations [All Narcotics violations].
• Gambling.
• Offenses Against Family and Children: Includes all charges of nonsupport and neglect of family and
   children. [Substation data: Includes Violations of Protective Orders, child abandonment, etc.]
• Liquor Laws : Includes bootlegging, maintaining unlawful drinking places, furnishing liquor to
   minors, etc.
• Drunkenness.
• Disorderly Conduct: Includes disturbing the peace.
• Kidnapping
• Criminal Trespass
• Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle
• ALL OTHER OFFENSES: [Substation data is mostly resisting arrest, obstruction, perjury, etc., plus
