2005/2006

1. Geology and Geophysics

(1) Geology
China Geomechanics Research Institute has conducted surveying and mapping at Prydz Bay for producing a geological map of the area at the scale of 1:500,000. A
range of 260km around Zhongshan Station has been surveyed for the first time, covering eastern Amery Ice Shelf, Landing Steep Cliff, and Mulker Mountain Range.
The Prydz orogenic belt and mass composition have basically been identified.

(2) Geophysics
Undertaken by Institute of Geology and Geophysics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, it is a long-running routine observation project for collecting basic geo-
magnetic data at Zhongshan Station. All the collected data are input into geophysics data network of both China and WDC-D, an international organization.

(3) Geodesic Survey and Earth Tide Observation
GPS International Cooperative Survey, undertaken by Wuhan University Surveying and Mapping Center, is aimed to share data on the following issues: A. Relative
motion ratio and motion direction between Antarctic plate and neighboring plates and their micro-plates. B. Relative motion between crystal bodies of Antarctic
internal plates. C. Benchmark unification of Antarctic vertical system to identify sea-level altitude of every tide observation base. D. Vertical lithosphere motion
caused by ice cap melting and ocean load changes. E. Interaction between Antarctica and rest of the world.

(4) Earth Tide Observation
Study on Eastern Antarctic Sea Level Variations, a joint project between Wuhan University and Australian Antarctic Division, has been carried out in a bid to
identify sea level variations in the southern oceans, changes of sea level and seabed, Antarctic offshore current and Antarctic tide changes.

2. Glacier and Climate

(1) Climate
    A. Air temperature variations over the past 50 years in the Antarctic and its proximate areas are not in line with that of the global average. The temperature
         increase mainly takes place in Antarctic Peninsula, while it does not witness a significant increase in the bulk of the Antarctica continent. Moreover, it has
         formed a downward trend. Ice shelf melting and collapse happened in western Antarctica in recent years, yet it has not incurred in the eastern Antarctica. Air
         temperature data collected at Great Wall Station and Zhongshan Station all evidence the above –mentioned assertions.
    B. The study on the ozone-volume triggering short term climatic change in the Antarctic and the formation mechanism of ozone layer has indicated that over the
         past 40 years there has been a significant downward trend of -2.9%/10a. The observatory data collected at Zhongshan Station evidence such an assertion.
    C. Study shows that Antarctic Oscillation Index is in close connection with East Asian Current and China weather, and has laid a new foundation for further study
         of the role of Antarctic sea ice playing on the atmospheric current and China weather.
    D. Automatic meteorological data on the ice cap are applied to study ice cap surface altitude changes and ice cap mass balance in Amery Ice Shelf, Lambert Ice

        Basin, eastern Antarctica, suggesting an altitude increase of ice cap surface at LGB-69 area. These findings will serve as the direct basis for evaluating mass
        balance of Lambert Ice Basin-Amery Ice Shelf, interpreting climate record in ice core and for verifying satellite Figure 2 Monthly Ozone Volume Average
        (1993~2004) finder results.

(2) Glacier
A. Antarctica Inland Traverse to Dome A
Following data have been acquired during the traverse to Dome A:
    1) Acquisition for the first time of Dome A top-area ice cap thickness and subsurface configuration; acquisition for the first time of Dome A-Zhongshan Station
        Profile ice cap thickness and sub-surface configuration. The initial analysis has suggested a significant variation of ice thickness at Dome A top area. The ice
        at the depth of 1500m and over 3000m may contain the paleoicecore of 1.2 million years, a section most probably to locate the paleo-icecore of 1.2 million
        years, and a site right to conduct sub-ice geological drilling and core paleo-inland study in the Antarctica.
    2) Measurement for the first time of the local annual average temperature is -58.4°C by applying the 10m snow pit. The automatic weather station put up at Dome
        A has recorded on 28 July 2005 the lowest local temperature of -82.34°C.
    3) Dome A survey. Technique of Differential-GPS and Electronic Total Station has been applied to support the real-time dynamic GPS survey. About 70 km2 have
        been surveyed at Dome A area, finding the coordinates of its peak at 80°22´00˝S, 77°21´11˝E, and its highest altitude of 4,093m.

3. Space Physics

Cooperating with counterparts from Norway, Japan and Netherlands, scientists from PRIC have carried out Antarctic-Arctic conjugated observation at Zhongshan
Station and Svalbard Station. A host of non-coherent scattering radar sensors available in the Antarctic and the Arctic, including the one on Svalbard, have been
applied for conjugated study of aurora and geomagnetics. Following progress and developments have been made:
   (1) At the Yellow River Station in the Arctic, all-sky multiple-band aurora imaging observation system made it possible to practice for the first time in the
        international community the real-time observation of three-aurorafeature-spectrums. Lots of conjugated observation data have been collected at various
        stations in both Antarctic and Arctic, which led to the discovery of simultaneous emergence of both multiple-level auroras in the southern hemisphere and
        Pc5 pulse in the northern hemisphere.
   (2) The conjugated point in Antarctica for Yellow River Station in the Arctic has been positioned by means of calculations, which have also identified a system
        error with the internationally established calculation result. The error was about 10_displacement to the west of the correct figure in longitude. Incurrence
        ratios of geomagnetics in Antarctica and the Arctic have been recorded. The relationships of geomagnetic incurrence in the Antarctic and the Arctic with
        geomagnetic incurrence observation spots, seasons and local times have bee studied.
   (3) HF radar data were applied to study the dayside high-latitude reconnection events when the interplanetary magnetic field was strongly northward. It is
        confirmed that the high-latitude reconnection is pulsed. Ionospheric flow bursts observed in the postnoon sector on closed field lines were confirmed to be
        related with this pulsed reconnection. These phenomenons were conjugate between both hemispheres. Seasonal features of the ionosphere for different solar
        activities at Zhongshan Station, Antarctica, have been obtained. A three-dimensional, time-dependent high-latitude ionosphere model has been developed for
        the study of the high-latitude space weather phenomena.

4. Biology and Life

(1) Polar Micro-organism Study
PRIC has worked on polar micro-organism study and has achieved the following progress and developments:
    A. Efforts have been made for separation, purification and preservation of polar micro-organism bacteria strains. 500 plus additional strains of bacteria, and 40
        plus strains of Arctic marine ice psychrophile have been discovered.
    B. PCR-DGGE has been applied to analyze the systematic growth diversity of marine bacteria in the Canadian sea basin ice and sedimentation environment in the
        Arctic.
    C. Temperature and salinity endurance tests of 450 plus strains of sea ice bacteria have been done. Preliminary analysis of their enzyme production has been
        made. 16S rRNA sequence molecule identification technique has been applied and Pseudomonas sp. BTs10022, which is most productive in bacteria strains
        at the temperature of 24_, has been discovered.
    D. About 100-batch screening on anti-tumor activity of polar fungi and bacterial strains has been done, and LC-UV and LC-ELSD fingerprint chromatogram of
        their fermentation products was established. Positive rate of screening was about 6%. Three of these primary extractive samples had 100% inhibition on
        tumor-cells showing the great inhibiting capabilities on tumor.

(2) Antarctic Paleo-eco-environment Study
University of Science and Technology of China has undertaken studies of the Antarctic Paleo-eco-environment and Arctic Environment, and has achieved the
followings:
    A. The historic information of human civilization has been found existing in the seal feather and life form dung and dirt in the Antarctic. Hg content fluctuation
         has been seen in noticeable corresponding relationships with human metallurgy civilization.
    B. The seal dung and dirt biological geochemistry model combination characteristics have been identified.
    C. Ecological geology model changes of Antarctic penguin habitat have been established. Features of penguin habitat changes over the past 150 plus years have
         been suggested.
    D. It has been found that 87Sr/86Sr, the soluble phase ratio of dung and dirt of penguins and seals in the Antarcctic could be refereed to as the new index of sizes
         of Antarctic marine animal colonies in the history, thus providing a new method to study the ecological history of sea birds and sea animals.
    E. The paleo-wave-cut notch sedimentations have been applied for restoration of climate changes in Fildes Peninsular from 4,600 years ago up to now.
    F. Marine ecological DDT contamination fluctuation history over the past 50 years has been re-modeled by using penguin dung and dirt.
    G. The studies have shown that soil in the Antarctic tundra circumstances under the cover of ice is still capable of producing N2O beacuse of microorganisms. At
         the same time, increased accumulation of penguin dung and dirt could generate a big boost to the emission of Antarctic tundra methane.
    H. Efforts have been made to renew the study of relationships between the number of Arctic sea birds at Ny Alsund Area over the past 2,000 years and snow-
         melting speed rate. It has been noted that the number of Arctic seagulls has undergone five significant fluctuations, which was in correspondence with the
         rise and fall of air temperature. It has been suggested that relatively high or low temperature is not conducive to the seabird growth.
    I. Arctic moss plant,fringy plant and tubular plant, the three widespread plants in the Ny Alsund Area, have been used to study the modern contamination sources
         and extent at the Ny Alsund Area. The study has shown that coalmine operation at the Ny Alsund Area is the major source or lead, HG, and other heavy
         metals contamination. Moss plant could be used ahead of other plants as sensitivity indicator of plant contamination and heavy metal contamination.

(3) Study of Southern Oceans Living Resources
The Institute of Oceanography under Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Yellow Sea Fishery Research Institute under the Agriculture Ministry, have teamed up in the
study of krill and other living resources in Southern Oceans. In addition to krill biology study, acoustic assessment of krill quantity and research of zooplankton
ecology have been conducted, noting difference exists among krills living in different living circumstances. Additional materials have been added for further research
on krills. Moreover, the greater range of composition and distribution of medium-and small-sized zooplanktons has been discovered. Zooplankton colony studies
have been made on the cruise from Great Wall Station and Zhongshan Station and at the outside edge profile of Amery Ice Shelf. A significant phenomenon has been
discovered in the research_The investigation at the Amery Ice Shelf outside edge profile has identified for the first time the high-density fish larvae community,
where it might be an egg-incubating site for those kinds of Antarctic offshore fish.

5. Oceanography

(1) Sea Ice
PRIC has undertaken the projects of sea ice physical process, digital simulation and climate change. Below are what they have done or achieved.
    A. The automatic weather observation buoys deployed in the Arctic icy waters had been in the continuous operation for eight months recording the actual data of
        floating ice movement and changed interface parameters, discovering the accurate 2-D floating ice movement. The two sets of polar floating buoys deployed
        in the Southern Oceans have been in continuous recording of on-site data of sea ice movement.
    B. The latest parameter-based program has been made about high-latitude Arctic ice-air transfer after the amount of on-site data collected both at the Antarctic
        and the Arctic have been studied.
    C. Satellite monitoring and digital simulation has led to the observation of variation features of polar cyclone during the 2003 Arctic Expedition of China.

(2) Marine Chemistry
The 2nd Institute of Oceanography of the State Oceanic Administration has undertaken the basic academic research projects, such as Antarctic Marine Living
Resources Characteristics, Carbon Transfer Process at Prydz Bay and Proximate Sea Waters. Below is what have been done and/or achieved:
    A. The flux and composition of the deep-sea sedimentation particles at the said waters have been acquired. They have typical seasonal changes with flux peaks
         taking place all in the summer season. Actinide components inclusive of calcium carbonate, organic carbon and bio-silicon are the major ingredients, taking
         up more than 60% of the flux total. The annual POC flux is approximate to that of the global oceans average, while the annual flux of bio-silicon is
         predominantly higher than that of the global average. The study shows that geo-chemistry process of sea basin bio-silicon and organic carbon is non-
         coupling.
    B. Initial study has been made on the preliminary digenesis of actinide elements of the Southern Oceans sediment-sea water interface, and has caught the mass
         flux of actinide elements of sediment-sea water interface.

(3) Interchange of Atmospheric Chemistry with Sea Air
The 3rd Institute of Oceanography of the State Oceanic Administration has undertaken studies of the Southern Oceans pCO2 variations in time and space and its
adjustment factors, climate abnormity in the Antarctic and its impact upon China’s climate, Svalbard area atmosphere environment monitoring and assessment, as
well as CO2 system neighboring Svalbard Islands.

   A. Describing the pCO2 distribution features of open waters, glacier edge sea ice waters and high-intensity waters; the comparative study of carbon flux in the
       Arctic and Antarctic oceans focuses on the elaboration of major drive factors. The essay has been published in the English-language academic journal
       Oceans, and has been presented in the international conference themed Climate Change and Sub-Arctic Marine Ecology System, held in Canada in 2005, and
       another international conference themed Impact Mechanism of Climate and Human Activities upon Edge Sea and Continental Shelf, held in Russia in 2005.
   B. Efforts have also been made on the study of marine nitrogen cycle and marine sulphur by taking samples of N2O and aerosol underway. The paper titled
       Progress and Development of Marine N2O Study is to be published on Earth Sciences Progress and Development.
   C. China-US Arctic cooperative project, Comparative Study of Sea-Air pCO2 Flux was sponsored jointly by NOAA and the National Natural Science Foundation
       of China. The cooperative project with Hong Kong City University on the permanent organic pollutants in Polar Regions has been finished in sampling of
       sea, lake and biology at Ny Alesund in the Arctic.

6. Interaction of Prydz Bay Water Mass and Circumfluence with Ice Shelf in the Antarctic

Sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, PRIC has undertaken the study of Interaction of Prydz Bay water mass and circumfluence with ice
shelf in the Antarctic. The study was carried out along Amery Ice Shelf and its outside edge, and has made the following progress and development:
   (1) The successful drilling down through the ice shelf has reached an ice core at a depth of 302m, acquiring the temperature variation curve along the ice shelf
         drilling hole, density variation curve, isotope composition layout of source ice layer of the ice shelf, and sea ice chemical component layout.
   (2)Multiple observations have been done by using ice radar, high-precision GPS and mass balance yardstick along the ice shelf edge profile and Prydz Bay. As a
         result, the specific features of the central ice layer structure of the ice shelf have been acquired, while the movement rate of ice shelf toward the sea has
         recorded 800m per annum.
   (3) The study taken at the waters of the front edge of Amery Ice Shelf, Prydz bay, the LADCP, CTD information and underwater videotaping, has shown that there
         is existence of ice shelf water at the temperature lower than -1.9_ at the waters of the front edge of the ice shelf in the summer season, evidencing that there is
         a narrow and warm current flow at the front edge of Amery Ice Shelf, and an east-west water flow at the middle of the said front edge. It has been discovered
         that there is also a relatively warm bottom-level current along the ice shelf front edge and under the ice shelf.
   (4) The studies of Prydz Bay continental shelf water composition and features show that there are five central water masses at the Prydz Bay continental shelf
         zone, namely, Antarctic summer surface water, Prydz Bay continental shelf water, Amery Ice Shelf water, metamorphic Antarctic Circumpolar Water and
         Prydz Bay deep water.
   (5) Ice shelf pattern of Southern Oceans circumfluence model has been developed.

7. Annual Changes of Southern Oceans Water Mass, Front and Circumfluence

Sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, PRIC has undertaken the study of annual changes of the Southern Indian Ocean water mass, front
and circumfluence. Columbia University also took part in this project by executing the high-density marine observation. The study has achieved two international
leading results, which have already been published in SCI journal.
   (1) A research result, different from what had been previously made by other scientists, has been obtained at the southeastern section of Indian Ocean, i.e., there is
        a significant double sub-tropical front structure along 120°E profile with 3 latitude degrees in between. Under the strong impact of cycle movement around

     the globe, the maximum surface flow rate of the sub-Antarctic front has reached 105.4 cm/s. This new research result suggests that it would be much more
     convenient and precise to affirm positioning of a front by checking the strong current of the front than by checking data collected at a hydrometer station, as
     the former keeps on monitoring on the preset voyage course and has higher coverage density in terms of space than the latter. Thus, with introduction of our
     proposed new working method, more accurate data have been gained with regard to the position, intensity and running direction of the sub-Antarctic front,
     the No. 1 polar front, and Antarctic circumpolar front. The sub-tropical front and the No. 2 polar front have no strong current, thus still needing hydrometer
     data for their nature research, an important research discovery deemed by the evaluation expert group.
(2) The analysis of four pieces of Antarctic summer data of XBT/XCTD/XBS has led to the new understanding that the east Indian Ocean_s upper section
     changes in time and space. The data have given a clear indication of major marine fronts: sub-tropical front, sub-Antarctic front and two polar fronts. The
     data have also suggested their annual change features. The two polar fronts have been discovered in the southeastern Kerguelen Plateau with several latitude
     degrees in between. High in temperature and salinity, the No.1 polar front extends to the sea bottom. Small in grads, the No. 2 polar front has a rather short
     depth. Strong temperature changes on the upper section of the ocean have been noted along with the time in the southeastern Kerguelen Plateau. The features
     of temperature changes with the mixed level and lowest-temperature level have convinced us that the extent of wind stress drive and length of sea ice
     coverage are the major factors affecting sea area temperature changes with the time going on.
