Your logbook

Your logbook is the official record of your progress in learning to drive – keep it safe and secure.

  Why use this logbook?

All new car learner licence holders must have at least 50 hours on-road driving experience before
taking the driving test. You must record the 50 hours car driving experience in this logbook. You
must take it to your driving test.

  Why you need experience

Learning to drive takes a lot longer than most people think. As well as controlling the car, you must
learn to make decisions and respond to what’s happening around you.

Research shows that learner drivers who get a lot of driving experience are up to 40% less likely to
crash during the first two years of driving solo.

The more you practise the safer driver you’ll become

  Choosing your supervisory driver(s)

When you’re learning to drive, you must have a supervisory driver sitting next to you. They can be
a parent, relative or friend. You might also want to get lessons from a driving instructor.

Learner Driver Logbook 3
  Choosing your supervisory driver(s) continued

Your supervisory driver should –
♦ be a safe, competent driver ♦ have the ability to provide training
♦ have a good driving record ♦ have a good understanding of the road rules

Your supervisory driver(s) must hold a full Australian car licence
(other than a provisional, learner or restricted licence) and have
had no suspensions or licence disqualifications in the past 2 years.

  Choosing your driving conditions

When using the logbook you may choose to record your driving experience in different conditions.
This means you can keep track of the type of conditions you’ve driven in. By the time you go for
your driving test, you should have lots of experience in all driving conditions.

Start your driving practice on quiet streets, and as your driving gets better, start driving in a wider
range of conditions. You could try driving in different –
♦ light conditions (day, night, dawn, dusk) ♦ weather conditions (eg rainy, fog)
♦ types of roads (eg highways, gravel roads) ♦ traffic conditions (light or heavy)
Only try driving in these conditions when you’re comfortable controlling your car. Try one new
condition at a time, so you have time to become familiar with each new situation. Don’t combine
lots of new driving conditions all at once. Try easier driving conditions first and slowly move to
harder conditions when you’re ready.

 4 Learner Driver Logbook
How to use the logbook

The logbook must be filled out accurately and honestly. Each time you drive a car, you must fill out
a new row.

     Step 1

In each row you must fill in –
♦ the date
♦ the time that you started and finished
♦ how many minutes you drove for
♦ where you started driving and where you finished
♦ the number of kilometres you drove*
♦ the car’s registration number
♦ your signature

You may choose to fill in the type of road, visibility, road and traffic conditions.

* Check the car’s odometer when you begin and finish driving, and take away the beginning number from the finishing
number to work out the number of kilometres you drove.

Learner Driver Logbook 5
     Step 2

After you’ve filled out a row, give the logbook to your supervisory driver to fill out. They must fill in
their name and driver licence number, then sign it.

     Step 3

When you’ve completed a page, add up the number of minutes that you drove and put this number
in the shaded box at the bottom of each page.

     Step 4

Keep track of the total number of minutes driven by filling out the table on page 11. Put the number
of minutes that you drove from each page in column A. You can keep a running total of the number
of minutes driven by filling out column B.
For example, if you drove for 360 minutes on the first page, and 180 minutes on the second page,
you would put 540 minutes in column B. The total in column B must reach 3000 minutes, which is
50 hours.

Example:
                    A B

     Step 5

After you’ve logged at least 50 hours (3000 minutes), put the total number of minutes in the table
on page 11.

Example:
   Total number of
                             3120
  minutes in logbook

     Step 6

Fill out the Declaration on page 12 and 13. Give it to your supervisory driver(s) to fill out (A
supervisory driver may fill out the Declaration when you’ve logged 50 hours or when you believe
they won’t supervise you again).

     Step 7

When you –
♦ are at least 16 years and 11 months old
♦ have logged at least 50 hours in the logbook
♦ have held you car learner licence for at least 6 continuous months*
♦ and your supervisory driver are satisfied that you have the skills to drive alone on the road
you can book your driving test.

* The Registrar may exempt you from this 6-month minimum period if you can satisfy the Registrar that you will suffer
hardship. Ring 1300 851 225 for further details.

     About the test

The test will find out if you

officer tells you (like at the next intersection, turn left)
2. do driving exercises – this means your testing officer will give you an everyday driving situation
and you’ll have to choose the best way to do it
♦ for example, you have left something behind at a friend’s house. You must choose the
best way (like 3-point turn, U-turn) to turn around and go back to the house, and when
you get to the house, choose how to park the car

  Practice driving tests

Help your learner pass their driving test by doing lots of practice driving tests. Make the practice
test last for about 35 minutes.

To do a practice driving exercise –
♦ Choose a driving exercise (with 2 manoeuvres from page 3 and some driving)
♦ Example: you missed the entrance to a carpark, take the next left and turn around, then go back
to the carpark and find a parking spot
♦ Explain the driving exercise to your learner and describe the manoeuvres they can choose (like a
   U-turn, 3-point turn etc)

To practice following directions –
♦ Plan where you want your learner to drive and make sure that it includes things like traffic lights,
   traffic signs, intersections and roundabouts
♦ Ask your learner to start driving and direct them where to drive
♦ When they have driven for about 5 minutes, tell them to pull the car over and stop driving

When they have finished the practice test, use the test items (p. 43-44) to see how they went.

Only encourage your learner to do a test when you
believe that they have sufficient skills to drive alone.
