Chairman’s Letter
Congratulations to the Tyler Junior College Apache Baseball Team for winning the Division III World Series. To top it off, the Apaches won at Mike Carter Field in front of their home fans. Thanks to the Convention and Visitors Bureau for securing these games in Tyler for a three-year run. The Governmental Affairs Committee organized a second trip to the Texas Legislature with a host of Regional East Texas elected officials to stand together and vote for East Texas on such issues as water rights, air quality, and transportation. The group numbered more than 40 and included Tyler Mayor Seeber, Longview Mayor Dean, Smith County Judge Baker and Gregg County Judge Stoudt. Phil Wilson, formerly from Tyler, addressed the group and said that East Texas must stand together on common issues to counter the votes from the Metro areas of the State. Governor Perry has since appointed Phil Wilson to be Secretary of State. We have a follow-up meeting to review the legislative session with Senator Kevin Eltife July 23, with the Chamber hosting the Regional Group. It is that time of year; 14 Chamber members have agreed to run for the seven open seats on the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Please give each of these candidates a personal word of encouragement for being part of this process. This assures the Chamber membership of always having top quality leaders to fill these open seats. Please vote for the candidates of your choice when you receive your ballot. Tyler has been blessed with sufficient rainfall this year to fill our lakes and provide water for our agriculture industries such as cattle, timber, and roses. Most of all, the rains have renewed the natural beauty of East Texas by making the grass a little greener, the trees a little larger, and each of us walks a little taller. Have a great Summer!
of Commerce has nominated fourteen individuals to serve on the Chamber's Board of Directors beginning October 1. Along with the annual survey, a ballot is being mailed to the membership to select seven of the fourteen nominees. This process of electing directors has been in place seven years. The Nominating Committee this year consisted of the current officers and at large, Ken George, Greg Kimmel and Gary Penkilo. The fourteen nominees are: Taylor Burns, Burns and

1. How can we avoid hiring poor performers? 2. What are our organizational strengths and weaknesses? 3. Do we have the right leaders on board? 4. Do we have the right people on the bus and in the right seats? 5. How do we ensure that we are growing our customer base and revenue? 6. How do we develop stronger commitment and loyalty among employees? 7. How do we reduce our anxiety and frustration concerning business development and growth?
