Texas financier R. Allen Stanford, named in a multibillion-dollar civil fraud case, has been found by FBI agents in Fredericksburg, Va., a Houston FBI spokeswoman confirmed today, and sources in the U.S. Justice Department said prosecutors are investigating his operations. Stanford has not been charged with crimes and the involvement of prosecutors doesn’t mean he will be. He is not being held. The prosecutors will coordinate with ongoing investigations by the Securities and Exchange Commission, FBI and Internal Revenue Service, the sources said. Agents from the FBI’s Richmond, Va. office today served Stanford with civil papers relating to a fraud case filed Tuesday by the SEC, spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap said. The SEC issued a statement saying it had asked the FBI for help in finding Stanford and delivering the civil documents. Fredericksburg is about 50 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. Stanford, 58, is chief executive of Houston-based Stanford Financial Group, the privately held parent company of an international banking and financial services network. In its complaint this week, the SEC alleged that Allen Stanford, two other executives and three affiliated firms engaged in a multibillion dollar fraud involving exaggerated claims about returns on investments. Stanford Financial Group was placed in receivership and its assets frozen, leaving thousands of clients uncertain about how much of their investment money they’ll be able to recover, and when. Depositors have been turned away this week when they attempted to withdraw money from Stanford banks and brokerages in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda.
