The cornerstones of Orlando’s local music scene team together to throw the inaugural Stone Soup Festival, a day-long, genre-crossing concert event headlined by hip hop revolutionaries Dead Prez on June 16. The classic Stone Soup fable tells the story of three war-ravaged soldiers searching for food in a poor and hungry village. While the inhabitants are unwilling to share their food with the travelers, there interest is peaked when the soldiers throw a stone into a pot and stir it with water, making “stone soup”. By convincing each member of the town to contribute just one food ingredient to the magic concoction, the soldiers create a meal that can feed the entire community by pooling together everyone’s resources for a greater good. Pine Street) on June 16 in downtown Orlando. Guerrilla Republik, a clothing line whose purpose is to raise political awareness and activism while promoting positive communal growth through hip hop culture, have risen to prominence with a series of recent events in the Orlando area, including their showcase in April featuring rapper Immortal Technique. Nonsense, Post, and Pinky Ring are all local record labels that have individually brought a plethora of original music to the Orlando scene over the past few years- the upcoming release of their shared Stone Soup compilation, featuring contributions from the labels’ rosters, sparked the idea to throw an event to showcase their talent. After teaming with Guerrilla Republik, the collective is poised to throw what is setting up to be a monumental experience for Central Florida. Critically acclaimed political hip hop act Dead Prez are set to headline an event featuring over a dozen bands from the labels, with more to be announced. folk, punk, hardcore, funk, and DJ sets. Tickets will be available online, through the artists, and at select local vendors. Elements of University of Central Florida, a group dedicated to promoting the positive aspects of hip hop to the college’s student body, are also on board for the event.
