Workplace Harassment – What You Must Know Before Confronting

Your Boss

If you deal with workplace harassment, there is no doubt you are probably

wanting to let your boss have it. If you haven't actually considered how you

might go about literally doing so, you have no doubt already confronted their

workplace bullying a million times in your head.

But before you jump into an altercation with your superior, identifying their

behavior is probably the most important thing you can do.

In order to address your boss effectively concerning their abusive behavior it is

imperative that you clearly define what it is that you consider to be bullying and

workplace harassment.

So the first thing you have to do is make a list of all the things that your boss

does that you feel is abusive. What is extremely important to remember as you

write out your list, is how his/her treatment toward you is harsher than that of the

others under them.

What showing the difference in behavior toward the other employees and you

will do, is it will make it stand out that the treatment you receive is harsh and

unfair. If you can show that you can make a case of it, simply threatening to do

so can be more than enough to get your boss to back down.

Now, there are different classes of abusive bosses and you have to learn how to

recognize each one.

Here is the list of types:

The Critic- These are the bosses who use put downs and insults to make you

feel small.

The Two Face Boss - The manager who is two faced can be very challenging at

times. They tell everyone one thing, and you something entirely different - often

leaving you very confused.

The Micro Manager - This is the boss that has to have their finger in absolutely

everything that you do, managing and controlling you every single step of the

way. It's tiring, and can wear you out fast.

The Screaming Missiles – These are the ones who are just totally out of control

and often seem irrational.

Because the traits and personalities that drive each of these types of

bosses/bullies are each different, there are different ways of handling each type.

If you have to deal with the critical boss, try explaining to them how criticism is

not what gets the job done.

If you are dealing with the two face bully, simply repeat back to him the things

you have heard, without mentioning anyone's name or indicting a co-worker.

Because he knows that he did it, this should be enough to stop him in his tracks.

Dealing with the micro-manager can be a bit challenging in that, the only way

you are going to get them to back down is by showing them how when you do it

without them constantly looking over your shoulder, you get better results. This

one takes a lot of inner strength because you can in no way back down.

The screaming missiles are best handled carefully, because they are the most

unpredictable of the lot.

As you can see, there are different approaches to each type of bully, and it takes

wisdom to know how to handle each one successfully without furthering the

hostile workplace environment.

I strongly suggest that if you are suffering from workplace harassment you check
