ELROSE COMPOSITE SCHOOL FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER
Ms C Champigny, Principal February 2008 HOME OF THE EAGLES LABELS FOR EDUCATION Principal’s Message
As first semester winds to a close, there are many exciting things going on here at the school. We have our Annual Ski Trip to Table Mountain on January 25th, with 75 students from grades 6-12 participating. Wrestling, basketball, and curling are in full swing. Watch the calendar for dates of competition so you can come out and cheer us on. The grade 10 Exchange group is busy planning and fundraising for their exchange with Sutherland Secondary School from North Vancouver. We will host our twin group the first week of April, and we travel to Vancouver the first week of May. Sunday, January 27th is Family Literacy Day. We encourage everyone to take some time to read with their families. As well, to encourage our literacy goals, the SCC is sponsoring a Buddy Read and pizza lunch. On Monday, January 28th, all the students from K-12 will be buddied up to read together, then have a pizza lunch, sponsored by the Elrose Composite School Community Council. It will be a fun way to promote literacy. Thanks to the SCC for their support. As always, sometimes in our busy-ness we forget to say thank you to the community for all you do. Thank you for supporting our numerous programs and projects. We couldn’t do it without you! It is hard to believe Christmas holidays are over and we are already well into January! It was brought to my attention that the Campbell Soup Company sponsors a program called Labels For Education. All our school needs to do is collect as many Campbell product labels as we can. Each product label is worth a certain amount of points, and obviously, the more points we have, the more items we can choose from in the catalogue. We can choose anything from books to videos & DVD’s to sports equipment, and more. I decided I would take on the job of collecting the labels and entering our totals on-line. Here is a list of items that are eligible for redeeming: Any Campbell Soup label Goldfish cracker label Any V8 juice label Prego Sauces So if you could help out by sending or bringing labels to the school, I would appreciate it. Please drop any labels off at the library or the office. If you want any information or have any questions – call me at the school. Tania Marchinko
BOOK FAIR
It’s that time of year again! After the huge success of the Book Fair last year, I am optimistic we will have another fantastic one this year. I’m holding the Book Fair from February 25-27th, so it is after the February break this year. I will have more details available as the Book Fair draws closer, but I want the community to know the library is holding one again this year and you will mark it on your calendars! See you there! fairly easily except for the error in the match she lost, which is pretty amazing since she was competing against grade 11 & 12 students. Kalli Youngstrom (2 of 4) She lost to last year’s national champion again. Bronze Medal Kennedy Elliott (3 of 3) Unfortunately, he was extremely outsized by his opponent. Other grade 9-10’s, in the 41 kg range, were wrestling in the novice division. He had to wrestle up. He wrestled very well, but his opponents were just too big for his skill to compensate for. They both had 5+ inches of height advantage as well as a significant weight advantage. Regina Miller Wrestling Classic: Gold: Kennedy Elliott (1st of 6) Kalli Youngstrom (1st of 8) th 5 Place: Shelby Irwin (5th 0f 11) The girls placed 10th overall. There were 28 teams. Congratulations - with only 2 girls they won over many major schools. The students wrestled awesome all weekend. The 2 matches that Shelby lost, she was winning over her opponents when she got pinned. She is in the elite list of girls. Kennedy put on a great performance – it was the best I have seen in two years. It was the best weekend of wrestling I have seen from the complete team. BC Age Class Championship Tournament results: Shelby Irwin 5th Place - 14 entrants (3 wins, 2 losses) Kalli Youngstrom 4th Place - 15 entrants (3 wins, 2 losses)

Senior curling is well underway. This season we have been able to form both a mixed and a girls team. We have had several practices and our skills are improving. We will be playing games at home and on the road in the coming weeks. Coach Bailey

Senior Girls’ Basketball
This year the team is looking at a very competitive season. We had an opening tournament in Kindersley in December, where we won the Consolation final after losing our first game to Wilkie, but beating Kyle and Martensville. We hosted a 6 team tournament January 11th and 12th, and went undefeated, beating Glaslyn, Plenty, and Davidson to win the whole thing. We have a tournament in Davidson in February, and we will be scheduling some exhibition games in the coming weeks. We’re looking forward to a strong performance at Conferences, where we hope to advance to Regionals and beyond.
JR GIRLS BASKETBALL
So far this season has been very good. We have four new players from grade six and they are learning a lot and having loads of fun. We have played games against Outlook and Eston and went to a tournament in Outlook. Coming up, we have games against Kyle and Eatonia. We are looking forward to the rest of the season and hope to have lots of fun.
Thank you to everyone who came out to cheer us on at our tournament last weekend. It was great to have such a large hometown crowd.
