The blending of traditionally distinct components of primary care services into cohesive entities is not unheard of in healthcare; in fact, it is something of a trend. Alexian Brothers Hospital Network has taken the concept of joining elements of primary care services and made the approach the heart and soul of a physician-driven ambulatory strategy centered on choice, ease and access. The strategy also serves as a cornerstone of the network's model of physician engagement and collaboration. A two-phase initiative designed to strengthen Alexian Brothers' market position will first optimize existing primary care infrastructure and then build on that foundation to reach further into the community with specialty and subspecialty services. Tracy Rogers, COO, Alexian Brothers, says transparency has helped the system guide physicians and staff through the transition. She emphasizes that the initiative could not have moved forward as smoothly as it has so far without the direct involvement of the system's employed primary care physicians.
