A Bibliography of Horses in the Humanities

Robert Baldwin, Connecticut College [rwbal@conncoll.edu]

As the most important animal in human history, the horse has been the subject of
numerous articles and books. Unfortunately, this rich literature is scattered and neglected
in often obscure journals. In the hope of stimulating a more inclusive, interdisciplinary
discussion, I have assembled this bibliography, drawing on art, folklore, history,
linguistics, literature, and religion. This bibliography has not been systemically updated
since 1987. A quick check of BHA, MLA, and ITER will yield a hundred new items.
