FLEET PHOSPHO SODA BOWEL PREP INSTRUCTIONS
PREP KIT: You will need to purchase a 3oz bottle of FLEET PHOSHO-
SODA. This can be purchased at any Kaiser Pharmacy or any other drug
If you have kidney problems, insulin-dependent diabetes or congestive heart
failure, you may not be able to take this preparation. Please ask your
physician for an alternative preparation.
7 DAYS BEFORE: DO NOT TAKE IRON PILLS, PLAVIX, AGGRENOX, VITAMIN
E OR ANY NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEDICATION (see
“Products that may thin your blood”). Tylenol or acetaminophen products are OK to use.
IF YOU TAKE BLOOD PRESSURE OR HEART MEDICATION, PLEASE
CONTINUE TO TAKE THEM.
5 DAYS BEFORE: DISCONTINUE COUMADIN.
24 HOURS BEFORE: DISCONTINUE HEPARIN AND LOVENOX.
*Notify your primary care physician you are doing this.
IF YOU TAKE MEDICATION FOR DIABETES (INSULIN OR PILLS) PLEASE
CALL THE DIABETES ADVICE RN AT 916-973-5440 OR YOUR PHYSICIAN
FOR ADVICE ON ALTERING THE DOSAGE OF THESE MEDICATIONS
PRIOR TO THE PROCEDURE.
*IF YOU ARE HAVING A SEDATED PROCEDURE, PLEASE BE SURE YOU
HAVE A DESIGNATED DRIVER TO TAKE YOU HOME. WITHOUT A DRIVER,
WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU SEDATIVE MEDICATIONS FOR THE
DAY BEFORE PROCEDURE:
Diet: You may have clear liquids* all day. Do not eat Jell-O after
beginning to drink the FLEET Phospho Soda.
DAY BEFORE PROCEDURE:
1. After being on a clear liquid diet throughout the day, you will begin taking the
preparation at 3:00pm
2. At 3:00pm mix 1 Tablespoon of FLEET Phospho Soda into 8oz of clear liquid
(7-Up or Ginger Ale are recommended)
3. At 3:10pm repeat #2
4. At 3:20pm repeat #2. You will have had 3 doses of the FLEET Phospho Soda at this
point. Continue to drink as much fluid as you can. At least 64 ounces of additional
fluid should be taken before 7pm.
5. At 7:00pm, repeat # 2
6. At 7:10pm repeat #2
7. At 7:20pm repeat #2. At this point you should have taken the entire bottle of FLEET
Phospho Soda. Please continue drinking fluid throughout the evening. At least
another 64 ounces of fluid should be taken in.
8. If you are having a sedated procedure, you may have nothing by mouth
(including water) for 2 hours prior to your procedure, unless you are also having
an EGD (upper endoscopy). If you are also having an EGD, please refer to
“Instructions for EGD.”
**If hemorrhoids become irritated, it’s OK to use Preparation H, Vaseline, Desitin, or
similar products. You may want to shower bowel movements instead of wiping with
toilet paper. Cold baby wipes can be very useful!
Beverages Soups Desserts
Water Consommé Jell-O
Sprite, 7-Up, Ginger Ale Chicken Broth Popsicles
Gatorades, Kool-Aid Beef Broth Clear hard candy
Tea or coffee (no milk or cream) Vegetable Broth (mints/butterscotch)
Apple Juice, white grape juice Bouillon
*TRY TO AVOID LIQUIDS WITH RED FOOD COLORING.
WE SUGGEST YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE OR BROWN LIQUIDS.
If you do not follow these instructions closely, you may not be clean enough for the
exam, which will require another prep and another appointment. Furthermore, the
large amount of clear liquids that are recommended will also prevent dehydration,
which can result from this prep. Please follow the instructions carefully.
FOR YOUR COMFORT, PLEASE WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHES TO YOUR
APPOINTMENT. DO NOT WEAR PANTYHOSE, GIRDLES, HIGH-HEELED
SHOES, TIGHT BELTS OR WAISTBANDS.
