Environm ental Management Sy stems Implementation COURSE AGENDA Course Instructor – Jay Collert, CHMM, CET Day One: 8:00 AM Section 1: Introduction To ISO 14001 Section 1 includes a brief discussion of the history and principles of the ISO14001 standard. A detailed discussion of the driver for implementation of an EMS for federal government agencies, EO 13423 and the requirements of that EO as it relates to EMS and environmental compliance. Break Section 2: ISO 14001:2004 EMS Requirements – Clauses 4.1 and 4.2 Session 2 discusses the purpose of an EMS. An analysis of Clauses 4.1 and 4.2 of ISO 14001:2004 is then presented. Participants will gain an understanding of the general requirements for establishing an ISO 14001 EMS and the requirements for the Environmental Policy. The presentation includes a discussion of the environmental philosophy that organizations must consider when establishing an EMS. Lunch Exercise 1 – Environmental Policy Statement Using examples, a checklist, and a series of question, participants will be able to put together an Environmental Policy statement conforming to the ISO 14001 standard and be able to review an existing Environmental Policy statement for conformance to the standard. Section 3: ISO 14001:2004 EMS Requirements – Clause 4.4 Session3 presents an analysis of Clause 4.4 of ISO 14001:2004. Participants will gain an understanding of the requirements for implementing an ISO 14001 EMS and the operational controls that must be in place. Topics include resources, roles, responsibility and authority; competence, awareness and training; communication; documentation; control of documents; operational control; and Emergency preparedness and response. (Note: ISO 14001 Clause 4.3 is presented in Section 7, “Environmental Aspects & Impacts Workshop) 10:15 AM 10:30 AM 12:00 PM 1:00 PM 1:45 PM Environmental Management Systems Implementation Agenda Aarcher Institute of Environmental Training, LLC 2:30 PM 2:45 PM 3:45 PM Break Section 3: ISO 14001:2004 EMS Requirements – Clause 4.4 (continued) Exercise 2 - Resources, Roles, Responsibility, Authority & Communication Using a series of checklists and development matrixes, participants will assemble in teams and will assign and identify the resources, roles, responsibilities, and authority and communication channels necessary for conformance with this clause. End of Day One 4:30 PM Day Two: 8:00 AM Section 4: ISO 14001:2004 EMS Requirements – Clause 4.5 This session presents an analysis of Clause 4.5 of ISO 14001:2004. Participants will gain an understanding of the requirements for checking the EMS. Topics include monitoring and measurement; evaluation for compliance; nonconformity, corrective action and preventive action; control of records; and internal audit. One exercise will enhance the participant’s understanding of the requirements for identifying nonconformities, and for documenting corrective actions and preventive actions. Break Section 4: ISO 14001:2004 EMS Requirements – Clause 4.5 (continued) Exercise #3 - Nonconformity, Corrective Action and Preventive Action Using exercises, examples, and checklist, participants will be able to identify whether nonconformity has occurred and will know the difference between corrective action and prevention action. Lunch Section 5: ISO 14001:2004 EMS Requirements – Clause 4.6 This session presents an analysis of Clause 4.6 of ISO 14001:2004. Participants will gain an understanding of the requirements for conducting a management review of the EMS. Sample management review checklists will be examined and discussed in this section. Break Section 6: Strategies for Implementing an ISO 14001 EMS In Session 6, participants will be provided with some best-practice methods for effectively implementing an ISO 14001-compliant EMS. An exercise will provide the participant’s with an opportunity to develop an EMS Implementation Plan. End of Day Two 9:30 AM 10:00 AM 11:00 AM 12:00 PM 1:00 PM 2:15 PM 2:30 AM 4:30 PM The Clean Water Compliance Bootcamp Agenda 2 Aarcher Institute of Environmental Training, LLC Day Three: 8:00 AM Exercise #4: EMS Implementation Plan Using a timeline checklist and working in teams, participants will develop an EMS implementation schedule that will include all clauses of the ISO 14001 standard that they can take back to their agencies/workplace and use for their own implementation of their EMS. Break Section 7: Aspects and Impacts Workshop ISO 14001:2004 EMS Requirements – Clause 4.3 Lunch Workshop #1: Activities, Products, Services and Aspects Using the inputs and outputs identified from Exercise 5, and using a developed Aspects and Impacts worksheet, and working in teams, participants will determine what impacts their activities, products, or services have on the environment. Break Workshop #2: Environmental Objectives and Targets Using the results from Workshop #1, and a generic ranking formula, and working in teams, participants will identify which impacts are significant and they will develop targets and goals to reduce those impacts.
