ADVOCACY: MATCHING ACTIONS TO AGENDAS
Adapting from Edward de Bono**, the following Six Advocacy Gloves might be used in developing school library advocacy campaigns that not only extend the reach of and promote the library, but also connect firmly to the agendas of others. ADVOCACY GLOVE NAVY [ Steady; Reliable] The library can always be counted on to facilitate the work of all teachers and administrators in the school. (“The library can be counted on.”) BROWN [Pragmatic; Objective-oriented] The library is a pragmatic and practical program that fulfills school objectives, priorities, basic values and principles. (“The library gets it done.”) GREY [Thoughtful] The library generates thoughtful learning and a culture of literacy and inquiry. (“The library leads to learning.”) PINK [Caring; Personal] The library provides a caring environment and opportunities for students to pursue whatever ideas interest and concern them. (“The library helps students develop personally.”) ORANGE [Empowering] The library empowers students to evaluate information and make meaning on their own. (“The library empowers students to take charge of information rather than be victims of it.”) PURPLE [Successful; Real-world] The library promotes the school’s official role in the community by connecting students to real issues and ideas.
