Visiting the USA
Some student organizations may opt to do service work or plan a trip outside of Canada to the United
States. However, it is not easy for all students to participate. As many universities now have a large
population of international students, extra steps need to be taken by these students in order to
participate.
Additionally, the requirements for Canadians to visit the USA have changed in recent years.
Please see below for more information for International Students and Canadian Students.
For International Students:
1. Students from the following countries may visit the USA without obtaining a US Visa before travel
as part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP):
Andorra Iceland Norway
Australia Ireland Portugal
Austria Italy San Marino
Belgium Japan Singapore
Brunei Latvia Slovakia
Czech Republic Liechtenstein Slovenia
Denmark Lithuania South Korea
Estonia Luxembourg Spain
Finland Malta Sweden
France Monaco Switzerland
Germany Netherlands United Kingdom
Hungary New Zealand
a. Students using the VWP must have an electronic/machine readable passport - information
on the passport requirements may be found here:
http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html#mrppassport
b. Students must first register with the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) at
http://cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/esta/ in order to qualify for this program
2. Students who do not qualify for the VWP must obtain a US Visa to gain entry into the USA.
**Please note that having a US Visa does not guarantee entry into the USA, which is determined by
the immigration official at the port of entry.**
a. Students requiring a US Visa must make an appointment for an interview with the US
Consulate in Toronto – this can be booked online or by phone and a charge is applied. To
avoid high costs it is reccommended to apply online.
b. Once an appointment time is assigned an application package/link to the application will be
sent via e-mail.

US Visa and they will be approved or denied.
3. Students who require a Temporary Resident Visa (a.k.a. TRV or Entry Visa) when entering Canada
do not generally require one to return upon visiting the USA – check with the Citizenship &
Immigration Canada (CIC) to see if you are exempt from this requirement.
**International Students should visit UWO’s International Student Services department in the *new*
Western Student Services (WSS) Building room 2120 to get assistance with applying for their US Visa and
information on travelling while on a study permit**
For Canadians:
1. As of June 1, 2009 a Canadian passport or NEXUS card is required when travelling to the USA for all
methods of transportation
