Agenda ICRI CPC (2) 2003/Annotated Agenda INTERNATIONAL CORAL REEF INITIATIVE (ICRI) Coordination and Planning Committee (CPC) Turks and Caicos Islands, 17 – 19 November 2003 INTERNATIONAL CORAL REEF INITIATIVE (ICRI) Co-ordinating and Planning Committee Meeting Turks and Caicos, 17-19 November 2003 Annotated Agenda 1.0 1.1 Opening of Meeting Invocation and opening remarks Kingsley Been (Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Natural Resources) will give the invocation, followed by opening remarks by Judith Campbell (TCI Environment Director), who will welcome ICRI to the TCI. Welcome address by Chief Minister of TCI Michael Misick, the Chief Minister for TCI (also the Minister for Natural Resources), will officially address the meeting. Adoption of the Agenda Co-chair will ask the CPC to approve the agenda for the meeting. Matters arising from the last meeting Final endorsement of the Resolution on the Organisation and Management Structure for ICRI Formal agreement and resolution of outstanding points to trail Resolution for UK/Seychelles secretariat, with a view to improving ICRI’s organisation and work. New ICRI members Welcome new members (if any). Report from the ICRI Secretariat Review of ICRI Secretariat hand over and activities to date A run-through of what the UK/Seychelles has achieved thus far. ICRI Secretariat Plan of Action To outline the major activities scheduled over the next 18 months, working towards the four action points: • raise the awareness of the importance of coral reefs; • give policy steer to the ICRI networks based on ICRI’s Call to Action, Framework for Action and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation; • foster improved cooperation on coral reef issues between United Nations (UN) bodies, Governments, regional seas programmes and donor agencies; • engage more actively the private sector, especially in terms of funding local development projects that promote the conservation of coral reefs, sustainable development and integrated coastal zone management. ICRI host country initiatives Small Grants Scheme – Announcement A new UK/Seychelles initiative designed to give ICRI meetings a concrete output and to promote through small-scale projects co-operative and complementary working among ICRI members and partners. Regional Activities Cancun: follow up activities Reports and illustrative approaches on implementing the ICRI Cancun commitment to prepare a report outlining the work done by each partner to advance the goals of ICRI. White Water to Blue Water Presentation and discussion: a WSSD partnership approach to promoting integrated watershed/coastal management in the wider Caribbean. Implications for coral reef management and ICRI, including benefits of integrated approach and potential role of ICRI in partnership. Southern Caribbean World Heritage Site Nomination Presentation: a case study and potential implications for ICRI Engagement with other processes Marine Protected Areas: From Durban 2003 to the CBD to Melbourne 2005 Report back from Durban; implications for CBD and ICRI, and follow up. Key issue – how can the coral reef community through its protected area work benefit from and contribute to the WSSD and related targets on marine protected areas. Can ICRI chart a course of action on coral reef protected areas which helps countries and the wider international community? SIDS Barbados +10 The implications for ICRI and coral reef management of Barbados+10 and the contribution that ICRI can make. Global Marine Assessment update Purpose and potential: the implications for ICRI and coral reef management, and the contribution that ICRI can make. Report on progress and next steps. ICRS Meeting, Okinawa, June 2004 Report on organisation and logistics of the ICRS meeting. Discussion of ICRI’s role. Nairobi Convention Coral Reef Task Force: issues and priorities Regional strengthening through the regional seas programme – how a task force can help.
