nice turn-out and it was a lively seminar. Thanks are extended to Balaji for planning this
Internship Opportunities Seminar update: Carla Kinslow reported that she is ready for her
seminar tomorrow (18Sept). The room reserved is Levin 3.320 and refreshments have been
ordered for 15 people. Stacy indicated that more people than 15 may attend (based on RSVPs).
Stacy will ask Dr Coppenhaver to forward the flyer to GSBS students and post-docs Tuesday
morning. Carla will send her powerpoint presentation to Sergio Tuesday morning for posting
on the CCD website. Laura Teed copied handouts for distribution at the seminar and Stacy
will bring them to the room on Tuesday afternoon.
UFCU Seminar update: October 9th does not work for Jill Kaiser so October 16th 4-5:30 was
decided upon as a replacement date. Austin will be the contact person and will develop a
flyer, reserve the room, and order refreshments. Because of Ms. Kaiser‟s generosity of giving
multiple financially-based seminars for the UTMB community, CCD approved a measure to
give her a laser pointer as a thank you gift.
Interviewing skills workshop update: Dr Kevin Wooten is confirmed for November 10th 9am-
12pm. CCD will discuss this morning seminar, the advertising, room reservation, lunch, the
refundable deposit, and gift (possibly?) at our next meeting.
Career Fair discussion, Update? CCD will wait for Balaji to discuss any developments with
Professionalism Summit Roundtable: October 2, 2-4pm following a banquet lunch at 12pm.
Julie and Meredith are the graduate student representatives on the Professionalism
Subcommittee. This summit will involve a poster presentation of grants awarded and other
current projects on professionalism here on the UTMB campus. The keynote speaker, Dr
Jordan Cohen, will speak about “Professionalism: A new covenant for a new era” followed by
a roundtable discussion where the professionalism goals for the next year will be discussed.
Julie and Meredith will attend but also opened the invitation to anyone else on the CCD who is
interested in attending.
Dr. Travis Young in the Center for Technology Development (and former prez of the CCD)
reported that the CTD is hosting an hour-long seminar on “Career Opportunities in
Technology Transfer and Profiting from Your Research.” CTD would like the help of CCD in
advertising for this wonderful opportunity to learn more about how to patent your invention
and about technology development and intellectual property as a career choice after graduate
school. This seminar is tentatively scheduled for October 8th from 4-5pm and pizza wil be
provided by the CTD. Travis will send all of the information to CCD and Michelle will create
flyer for this event. Travis will also reserve the room and serve as the RSVP for this event.
Entering Mentoring: Training a New Generation of Scientists, Advertising. This document
will be placed on the CCD website for perusal by all.
CCD decided that the GSBS community does not know all that the CCD website has to offer so
Sergio will draft an „advertisement‟ to be sent GSBS-wide next week.
Meeting adjourned at 4:40pm. Next meeting on October 8th 2007 at 4pm in the Dean‟s conference
room. Stacy will officiate as Julie will be writing her qualifying exam.
