Antimicrobial effect of extract kaffir lime peels (Citrus hystrix DC) observed in mice with typhoid fever model.
The peel of kaffir lime is extracted using ethanol and then the extract administered orally with 16 mg dose. To
evaluate the antimicrobial effect from extract of kaffir lime peels, the mice is infected with Salmonella
typhimurium orally with 108 concentrations and incubated 7 days. In addition, the research was divided into
groups (n=5) including negative control (as a confirmation), positive control and 3 groups were treated by
extract of kaffir lime peels at 16 mg dose and incubated 24, 48 and 72 hour after adminstration. Then, the result
of Salmonella typhimurium colonization which inoculated in Bismuth Sulphite Agar (BSA) is calculeted and
analyzed using ANOVA and regression-correlation Pearson (p<0,05). The result showed that a significant
decrease of colonization with increasement of incubating time after oral administration of extract. The best
decreasement of colonization is observed at 72 hours incubations after oral adminstration of extract compered
with 24 and 48 hours incubations. In conclusion, extract of kaffir lime peels is found to be effective in
decreasing the Salmonella typhimurium colonization in mice with typhoid fever model.
