The International Network of North Korean Human Rights Activists, in
collaboration with NGO’s Justice for North Korea, and Helping Hands
Korea, have assisted nine North Korean defectors (details and photos
attached) in their successful bid for diplomatic sanctuary as refugees to the
Embassy of Denmark in Hanoi, Vietnam at 10:08 A.M on Thursday, the
24th of September, 2009. It is expected that the North Korean refugees will
eventually proceed to South Korea, as North Korean defectors are de facto
South Korean citizens upon the decision of permanent flight from North
Korea. The chronic difficulties activists have experienced in enlisting the
assistance of South Korean diplomatic stations in protecting North Korean
refugees in third countries has often made it necessary to seek assistance
elsewhere. Perhaps this dramatic and desperate bid for freedom will prove
to be an impetus to the South Korean Emassy in Vietnam to take a more
proactive role in protecting North Korean refugees as provided for by
customary international norms of humanitarianism. This field action
providentially corresponds with the release on Sept. 24 th of the Toronto
Resolutions regarding the plight of North Korean refugees, as well as the
Save North Korean Refugees events in Washinton D.C. on the same day.
