FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 17, 2008 Contact: Sahar Wali 503-235-8710 office/503-260-7186 cell swali@barackobama.com GOV. KATHLEEN SEBELIUS: BARACK OBAMA’s ECONOMIC PROPOSALS WILL PROVIDE REAL RELIEF FOR OREGON’S WORKING FAMILIES Applauds Obama campaign’s outreach to Oregon women with Women Weekend of Action, Women Wednesdays PORTLAND, OR – Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius spoke with Oregon media today to discuss the country’s worsening financial crisis and how Barack Obama’s economic proposals will provide real relief for working families in Oregon. Despite 660,000 Americans having lost their jobs and millions more struggling with rising health care costs, rising gas prices and the growing financial turmoil on Wall Street, Sen. John McCain continues to believe that the “fundamentals of our economy are strong.” “I don’t know what economy he is talking about,” Gov. Sebelius said. “We have some real challenges ahead. One of the reasons I am so interested in spreading the word about the Obama campaign is that I feel that we are at a point where we need to do everything we can to shift directions and get the country back on track.” Gov. Sebelius said that Sen. Obama’s upbringing by a single mother gives him a unique understanding of the challenges of working and caring for a family, especially how economic troubles hit working women the hardest in terms of health care costs, pension stability and pay equity issues. Touting Obama’s strong support among women since the beginning of the campaign, Gov. Sebelius applauded the campaign’s continuing efforts to grow its support among women across the country who she said will make the difference in this election. “There couldn’t be a sharper contrast in the campaign on the records on women issues and the direction they want to take the country than the Obama and McCain campaigns,” Gov. Sebelius said. “We just want o make sure that women across the country are paying attention and registered to vote.” Gov. Sebelius’ call also marked the launch of Women’s Wednesdays and Women’s Weekend in Oregon. Every Wednesday at all 13 Campaign for Change offices across the state, women will host women-to-women phone banks. This weekend, September 20th–21st, is the campaign’s Women’s Weekend of Action, which will include kick-off rallies, voter registration efforts, and women-to-women phone banks and canvassing across the state. ###
