MdAIR is offering the award for an amount up to $500. The research should contribute to the disciplines of institutional research or postsecondary education, and should relate to Maryland higher education. The MdAIR Executive Committee will determine the recipient from the pool of applicants and the recipient will be notified by April 10, 2009. The recipient must write a research paper and present it at an MdAIR Fall Conference within eighteen (18) months of receipt of the award. MdAIR Research Award Requirements 1. The applicant (or principal researcher if more than one) must be a current MdAIR member. 2. The research should contribute to the disciplines of institutional research or postsecondary education. 3. The research should relate to Maryland higher education. 4. The award funds will cover only those costs directly associated with implementing the proposed research project as outlined in the budget, and should not be used for indirect costs associated with the project. 5. The recipient must write a research paper and present it at an MdAIR Fall Conference within eighteen (18) months of receipt of the award. 6. All presentations of the research findings, whether at the MdAIR Fall Conference or in any other forum, must acknowledge the support received from MdAIR. 7. The deadline for submission of proposals is Friday, March 13, 2009. Evaluation Criteria for Research Award Proposals The proposals will be evaluated on a scale from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) using the following six criteria: Coherence: The extent to which the researcher can clearly articulate the: research problem, relevance of the project to the IR and higher education communities using existing literature, methodology, and implications of the research for the IR and higher education communities. Methodology: The researcher articulates an appropriate methodological plan for the research questions being investigated. Significance: The usefulness of the project to the MdAIR membership, to the IR profession, and to post-secondary education. Originality: The degree to which the researcher can express how his/her research questions or methodological approach is unique and innovative, thereby contributing to the extant literature. Feasibility: The researcher’s ability to carry out the project within the specified timeframe and with the stated human and fiscal resources, in light of receiving the research award. Presentation: The degree to which the researcher has clearly articulated what he/she proposes to present at the MdAIR conference if awarded. Selection Process The MdAIR executive committee will select the award recipient from the pool of applicants based upon the above stated criteria. The recipient will be notified by April 10, 2009. The MdAIR member whose research proposal is selected for the MdAIR Research Award will be announced publicly at the MdAIR Spring Institute on April 24, 2009. Award of Funds The recipient (and/or his/her organization) is expected to incur the costs associated with the research to which the award applies. The recipient must submit a summary invoice with supporting receipt documentation to MdAIR within 18 months of receiving the award (November 15, 2010). The MdAIR Treasurer will review the expenditures and reimburse the recipient (and/or his/her organization) for actual expenses up to the $500 award limit. Proposal Submission: To submit a research proposal for consideration, the applicant must complete ALL sections of the MdAIR Research Award Proposal Form on the MdAIR website (www.mdair.org), including: 1. Summary Information Research project title Researcher(s) name, organization, and contact information Research Project Abstract (100 word maximum) 2. Proposal (no longer than 3 – 5 pages) Purpose of the project and intended audience Research questions being addressed (problem statement) Review of relevant literature Data sources and/or data collection procedures Proposed data analysis Expected implications for IR or higher education Brief explanation of what one would present at an MdAIR conference 3. Timeline The timeline is a project schedule that includes anticipated project milestones (e.g., data collection completed, data analysis begun). The expected timeline for completion of the project should include the delivery of a one-page progress report for the Executive Committee approximately six (6) months after the notification of the award. 4. Budget The budget should include all expected expenses with estimated cost figures, including those you expect to be covered by the award. Please designate the line items in the budget that you expect to be covered by the research award, and briefly describe how the award will aid in your research activities. Note: The award funds will cover only those costs directly associated with implementing the proposed research project as outlined in the budget, and should not be used for indirect costs associated with the project. 5. Statement of Agreement The principal investigator should initial the appropriate field associated with the following statement: "If selected as the award recipient, I agree to the terms of the MdAIR Research Award. I agree to abide by the terms of the award and to submit a paper and a presentation reporting the results of my research to the MdAIR Fall Conference within 18 months of receiving the award. I agree to acknowledge the support provided by MdAIR in any announcement, listing, or published form of my findings." (Note: A formal statement of agreement must be signed by the recipient after the award is bestowed.)
