POPULAR CULTURE IN CONTEMPORARY SPAIN Sra. Martin office hours: 3 rd , 5 th , 2009-2010 8 th or by appointment Cell# 443-4305 COURSE DESCRIPTION Popular Culture in Contemporary Spain is intended for those who have a solid foundation in Spanish Language and wish to explore the rich world of Spanish culture. Our class time will be spent listening to, watching and reading authentic sources (music, TV programs, periodicals, etc.). We will discuss their meaning, share ideas and express opinions. Through these endeavors students will come to understand what life in contemporary Spain is like as well as the historic, economic, and social underpinnings that shaped the country. Students will: • Study contemporary Spain though TV, documentaries, music, the text: España contemporanea, internet sites and more • Demonstrate comprehension and express ideas and opinions regarding historical, social, and political information studied • Identify important people, periods and events in Spanish history and understand how they relate to life and social themes in current day Spain • Continue to develop their language skills by studying theme related vocabulary and conversational/colloquial expressions • Review grammatical structures using web-activities • Make oral presentations (formal and informal) on a variety of topics • Participate in classroom discussions and debates • Write essays, short papers • Conduct independent research and write a 3-5 page (typed) research based final project per semester Course Guidelines I. Academic Expectations It is expected that you: • DON’T MISS CLASS!! Since a significant portion of our class time is spent viewing the shows, films, etc., it is crucial that students attend class daily. Any work missed due to an unexcused absence will result in a zero. If a student has more than three unexcused absences, s/he will be asked to drop the class. If you have an excused and miss part of the show we are viewing, you must come to me before school to make arrangements to view it during your lunch/free period in a room assigned by me. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO -- Make- up work as soon as possible! Get the assignment (from me, my website, a classmate …) • Participate dynamically in class (participation is 30% of the grade). • Speak Spanish at ALL TIMES! – if you can’t or won’t; this is not the class for you. • Complete Reading assignments with care and accuracy -- there will be reading quizzes, grades discussions, etc. I expect you to Look up necessary vocabulary and make a list of questions you have. • Be prepared for discussions, debates, and class activities • Focus on grammar and vocabulary as you read (it is a great review) • Write your assigned essays on the computer DOUBLE SPACED • Please --Communicate any concerns you may have so I can give you the help you need. I have office hours 3rd, 5th, 8th or by appointment. II. Behavioral Expectations • Be considerate and respectful to all • Be here -- everyday-- on time. We will follow the school wide tardy policy. • Speak Spanish at ALL TIMES! – if you can’t or won’t; this is not the class for you. • Come prepared to listen, think and discuss. • Enjoy this class! (A good sense of humor and positive attitude are appreciated and rewarded!) III. PHONES: PLEASE –TURN THEM OFF!! I. If I see or hear your phone during class you will have to give it to me for the rest of the period. II. If there is a 2 ND occurrence your parents will be contacted and you will forfeit your phone until the end of the day. III. In case of a third occurrence, your parents will be contacted and you will be expected to turn your phone in to me at the beginning of class each day for the rest of the quarter NO EXCEPTIONS! IV. Materials - You should bring the following materials to class everyday: • A BINDER WITH DIVIDERS IS MANDATORY. THERE WILL BE BINDER CHECKS – FOR POINTS! Also, pen / pencil and loose-leaf paper that will fit your binder. • Assigned readings and handouts – it is essential that you save all handouts , ALL YEAR LONG! YOU WILL NEED THEM TO DO YOU RESEARCH AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS. For use at home – A GOOD SPANISH /ENGLISH DICTIONARY IS ESSENTIAL!!!!! (You can use on-line dictionaries, wordreference.com is a good site). IV. Grading Homework, quizzes, tests Projects, presentations, etc… 70% Oral Participation, daily assignments, attendance 30% THERE WILL BE A FINAL PROJECT INCLUDING AN ORAL PRESENTATION AND A 3-5 PAGE PAPER PER SEMESTER. THESE WILL TAKE THE PLACE OF A FINAL EXAM.
