Request for Proposals Hosting the ACUHO I James C

Request for Proposals: Hosting the ACUHO-I James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute ACUHO-I Seeks Campus to Host the James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute (NHTI) The ACUHO-I James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute, a five-day intensive institute that is designed for housing professionals that are committed to advancement within the field of university/college housing is seeking a new host institution. Since it’s inception in 1991 at the University of Florida and subsequent hosting at the University of Maryland, over 650 professionals have attended NHTI. The Institute provides a thorough professional development experience for professionals with three to five years of full-time experience who are looking to further their career in housing. Participants meet and interact with other colleagues, establish mentor relationships with experts in the field, develop professional development plans, and gain skills and competencies needed to meet the current and future demands of the profession. The Institute recognizes the importance of the evolving housing field, and it strives to provide participants with the knowledge and skills they will need to be successful in the ever changing field. The Institute utilizes senior housing professionals to provide classroom instruction on a specific topic, facilitate small group discussions, and assist participants as they construct individual professional development plans. The Institute’s curriculum is based on the competency research of Senior Housing Officers conducted in 1990 and updated in 2005. Additionally, the competencies are used by the participants to assess their current competency and create professional development plans to achieve their career goals. The two goals of NHTI: 1. To facilitate participants competency development through presentations of material that include opportunities for interactive learning. This is achieved through topic selection, curriculum building, and presentation guidelines. 2. To offer participants an opportunity for in-depth career development planning facilitated by a mentor relationship with an expert in the field. A professional development plan, consisting of assessment and decision-making (planning) tools is created with the assistance and guidance by faculty mentor. The goals are accomplished by a commitment to the guiding principle of community development: • Living arrangements encourage interaction and on-going discussion; • Dining arrangements encourage informal discussion about each other and the presentation material; • Experiential learning opportunities support the learning process especially for adult learners. Why Host the National Housing Training Institute: Hosting the National Housing Training Institute affords a campus the opportunity to contribute to the future of the profession by providing mid-level professionals a venue to reflect and plan for their future in the housing profession. Members of the host institution serve on the NHTI committee that plans and coordinates 2 the Institute. This opportunity allows the host institution staff the opportunity to experience the benefits of NHTI by “auditing” NHTI session presentations as well as interact with both NHTI faculty and participants by assisting with travel, food arrangements and other Institute details. The host committee provides 10 Teaching Assistants (TAs) to assist NHTI faculty during the course of the Institute. These TAs are often resident life staff, graduate students and ACUHO-I Interns. Lastly, in the process of hosting NHTI, both faculty and participants learn about the host campus and their housing operation. Occasionally, former NHTI participants apply for positions at the host institution due in part to the exposure to the hosting campus and the institute. The NHTI Host Application Process: Institutions apply to be considered as a host in a two stage selection process. 1. The first stage requires information about the campus to be submitted along with a narrative response and proposed sample budget. 2.
