Strategic Management Module Overview
The aim of this module is to enable you to appraise, design, implement
and evaluate future orientated plans for interacting with competitive
environments from the perspective of tourism related organisations and
destinations. Successful completion of the module is worth 7.5 credits
under the European Credit Transfer Scheme.
The material covered includes:
Learning the language of strategic management
The strategic planning process
Analysing the strategic environment
Strategic choice and implementation
On completion of this module you are expected to be able to:
Critically appraise the competitive environment and the impact this
will have on strategic choice for contemporary tourism related
Critically evaluate long-term planning decisions and the potential
these hold for tourism related organisations to exploit their
Critically evaluate the fit, in terms of the design of strategic plans in
relation to the contemporary tourism-operating environment.
Discuss the management challenges involved in managing change
in the implementation of strategic plans.
This module is assessed in two ways:
The portfolio of activities from each topic, which you should
complete as you work through the topics, and submit as one Word
A final assignment in the form of a 4,000 – 4,500 word report
The deadline for submitting the portfolio and your report is Friday 26
You should receive feedback and marks by Friday 14 November.
Time and Workload Commitment
This module is set at a postgraduate level and attracts 7.5 credits at level
7 under the European credit transfer system. Of course, not everyone
studies at the same pace, but you should expect to spend somewhere
between 7-10 hours per week including reading the online material, taking
part in discussion board and online sessions, completing the activities in
each topic and working on your assignment.
