Mr. Lumley graduated from Assumption University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He was born and raised in Windsor and has been Vice-Chairman of BMO Nesbitt Burns and its predecessor company, Burns Fry Ltd. since 1991. He served as Chairman of Noranda Manufacturing Group Inc. from 1986 to 1991. Chancellor Lumley spent 10 years as a federal Member of Parliament where he served as Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce; International Trade; Regional Economic Development; Communications; and Science and Technology. During this time he was also responsible for various Crown corporations, boards and commissions including the CBC;
Canadair; De Havilland; The Canada Development Investment Corporation; and Teleglobe. Lumley has served on a number of domestic and international corporate and advisory boards and currently serves on the boards of BCE; Canadian National; DaimlerChrysler Canada; Magna International; and Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group. Over the years he has been involved in a number of non-profit organizations and has chaired the Commission on Parliamentary Compensation and the Canada-Japan Forum. He has been married for 44 years to the former Patricia Thomson of Windsor. The couple has five children and 12 grandchildren.

Installation of the Chancellor
After the Invocation, the Chancellor-designate will enter, escorted by the 1st Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors and the Provost and Vice-President, Academic. The Chair of the Board of Governors will address the Chancellor-designate: "DO YOU, EDWARD LUMLEY, PLEDGE YOURSELF TO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THE CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WINDSOR AS PRESCRIBED BY LAW AND BY THE STATUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY?" The Chancellor-designate will respond: "I DO SO PLEDGE MYSELF." The 1ST Vice-Chair and the Provost/Vice-President will robe the Chancellor-designate. The Chair will install the Chancellor with the following words: "IN THE NAME OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WINDSOR I NOW INSTALL YOU, EDWARD LUMLEY IN THE OFFICE OF CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY AND I INVEST YOU WITH THE AUTHORITY AND CHARGE YOU WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY PERTAINING TO THAT OFFICE." The Chancellor will be escorted to his chair, and the Beadle, after presenting the mace to the Chancellor, will place it before him to signify the commencement of Convocation.
