Brief Description of the Lesson
Supply-side economics had been a theory until now. 1980’s…Students are thinking Madonna while we’re trying to teach Reagan! This lesson focuses on the implementation of this rogue economic theory and the effects of it. Before looking at Reaganomics we will examine why politics in the late seventies and early eighties are shifting to the right-wing.

Lesson Plan Objectives
Content Objectives: 1. Students will understand what social and political attitudes contributed to the election of 1980. 2. Students will be able to identify what “Reaganomics” is and contrast how it is different from Keynesian economic theories. 3. Students will develop their own decision as to whether or not Reaganomics was successful. Skill Objectives: 1. Students will defend (either written or orally) their position on the outcome of Reaganomics.

Pre-Lesson Expectations
(Provide a brief statement of the context for the lesson. Where should the lesson fit in the sequence of the class? What should a student know before beginning the lesson?) This lesson should be during the modern era unit after Vietnam War, Civil Rights movement, etc. Before beginning the lesson, it would help to review what it means to be liberal versus conservative. Also, review the concepts of supply and demand from civics and economics.

Activities
(Provide a step-by-step sequence of instructions for the teacher to teach the lesson. It is very important to be as specific as possible. A teacher should be able to follow the sequence and know not only what they should be doing in each step but also what the expectations are for the students in the appropriate steps.) 1) Have two quotes written on the board or overhead. Ask students to respond to these statements in their journals or on a piece of paper. (3-5 min) a. “Government is not the solution to our problem. Government is the problem.” b. “Supply creates its own demand.” (Both of these quotes are by Ronald Reagan) 2) Introduce the topic: “Conservatism reached a high point in the 1980’s with the election of Ronald Reagan. Why did the conservative movement gain so much influence during this time period?” (Challenge students to recall and critically think about what they have learned.) 3) Guided Reading or Lecture: (adjust as you prefer – some teachers prefer some individual student work, and some prefer teaching the section themselves.) Allow 8-10 minutes to complete the following from the textbook. 1. Define entitlement programs. 2. List 3 things the New Right opposed. 3. What groups of people made up the conservative coalition? 4. Who was Jerry Falwell and why was he important? Note: I lecture after guided reading while we are answering these as a class…I would include other details such as examples of entitlement programs and what the conservative coalition did support (school prayer). 4) Lecture (see attachment – Reaganomics Lecture Notes) 5) An Economic Report Card Activity - Even before he served as governor of California, Ronald Reagan had strong beliefs and specific ideas about the role of the government in the economy. To investigate the success of the application of his ideas when he was president, have students review the speech The Economic Recovery Program, 1981 to learn about his goals. Then have students compare Reagan's rhetoric to his accomplishments by making a checklist of his proposals and corresponding results. Students will then write a summary of their opinion on his policies, as supported by their checklists, and give Reagan a "grade" on the success of his domestic economic programs. (from PBS website, The American Experience) 6) Re-examine the journal entries from the beginning of the lesson. Have students reflect on how their response was similar or different from what they learned.

Assessment
(Provide an assessment plan to allow the teacher to evaluate a student’s progress toward meeting the objective(s) of the lesson. The assessment must include a rubric that tells a teacher how to grade the proposed assessment tool.) - From #2, if you choose to do the guided reading I would simply walk around at the end and assess if they attempted to answer the questions correctly and if so, give a check plus
