December 2008 An Uplift in Sales for Christmas
Finally some good news for the beleaguered Sales, Marketing and Retail sector, after seven consecutive months of decline, the number of Sales, Marketing and Retail roles advertised on the internet has finally turned around in December with an increase of 1.69%. It is a small growth but a welcome one and brings the Olivier Job Index to 377.04 after allowing for seasonal adjustment factors.

Last December we were reporting a bumper year for Sales, Marketing and Retail with almost every month in 2007 recording growth in demand with the sector enjoying the benefits of a buoyant economy and population boom. The new start ups needed a strong marketing campaign and focused sales team. 2008 however has seen a reversal of fortune with the number of roles advertised falling 28.33% since last December. This month finally has seen positive results with a rise in recruitment along with consumers hitting the shops for Christmas and the post Christmas sales. The upbeat atmosphere of festivities has been assisted by the rate cuts and one off payments for some individuals as part of the government’s stimulus plan.
State Comparisons
There have been mixed results amongst the states and territories with South Australia leading the recovery with a boost of 5.6% while Western Australia fell by 2.8%. Over the past year Tasmania has seen the best results jumping by 41.6% despite the poor results nationally. However, New South Wales has felt the full brunt of a struggling economy with the number of roles dropping by 37.5% from last December.

Leading the turnaround has been jobs in the Sales speciality which grew this month by 4.8% and was the only role type to see any increase this month and a good sign the companies are looking to the New Year for growth and improved sales rather than just rationalising costs. Retail has not fared badly this month either with rate cuts flowing through to consumers and store sales encouraging spending on the run up to and after Christmas. Stores have reported slower sales growth than previous years, but still much better than expected. A positive way to see in the New Year.
Customer Service, continues to struggle as the area least likely to see any expansion in the short term with a drop of 16.7% in the number of jobs advertised on the internet and shedding well over half the positions in 2008. It may be that companies have outsourced this area in an attempt to control costs. On an annual basis the results show a similar tale with those positions having a direct impact on revenues such as Sales and Retail faring the best, while the areas with an indirect influence on revenue and profitability have suffered the worst with Marketing and Customer Service being hit hard with drops of 50.7% and 63.6% respectively.
