VCU’s five run eighth puts game away as Spiders fall

Richmond traveled across town to meet Va. Commonwealth in a rare night game for the Spiders on Tuesday. Richmond entered the game 15-19-1 while VCU was 9-21. Temps for the Tuesday night game would be in the mid-50s to start and would be in the mid-40s before the game finished. Matt Trent took the mound for Spiders against lefty Michael Graham for the Rams. Michael Graham had an easy first for VCU as he got ground balls from center fielder Joe White and third baseman Hank Coogan. DH Evan Stehle struck out swinging. Matt Trent returned the favor in his half of the first as he set down the Rams 1-2-3. Left fielder M.L. Morgan grounded out to short. Second baseman Richard Gonzalez flew out to right. First baseman Jared Bolden grounded out to first.

After right fielder Ryan Metzroth’s groundout to third to lead-off the second, catcher Ryan Grant singled up the middle. First baseman Mike Mergenthaler singled through the right side as Grant moved to third. Shortstop Derek Boliek singled to right as Grant trotted home to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead. Mike Meregnthaler stopped at second. Left fielder Drew Lowry struck out swinging for the second out. Austin Reilly walked to load the bases with two out. Joe White grounded out to first for the final out. The Spiders scored a run on three hits and also left the bases loaded. VCU DH R.J. Schenk reached on a throwing error from Hank Coogan at third on a grounder and wound up at second. Center fielder Kwan Evans grounded out to short. Derek Boliek ranged far to his left on the hard hit grounder on the shortstop side of the second base bag to track down the ball and throw out Evans. Schenk moved to third. Third baseman Chris Jackson singled to right to score Schenk and tie the game at one. Right fielder Justin Wright’s grounder back to Trent forced Jackson at second. Wright moved to second on a throwing error from Derek Boliek at short trying to complete the double play. Wright moved to third on a balk. Trent struck out catcher Eric Curtis to end the second. The Rams scored a run on one hit with two Spider errors. The game moved to the third tied at one.

Hank Coogan singled through the left side to start the top of the third. Evan Stehle flew out to right. Coogan stole second. Michael Graham struck out Ryan Metzroth looking for the second out. Ryan Grant singled through the left side to score Coogan. Grant stole second. Mike Mergenthaler grounded out to first. Richmond scored a run on two hits to lead 2-1 after 2 1/2. VCU shortstop Joe Van Meter singled over third to left to open the bottom of the third. M.L. Morgan flew out to center. Richard Gonzalez singled to center to send Van Meter to third. Jared Bolden cranked a three-run homer to right. R.J. Schenk flew out to center. Kwan Evans walked. Chris Jackson singled to left as Evans stopped at second. Justin Wright popped up to short for the final out. The Rams scored three runs on four hits to lead 4-2 after three innings.

Brett Walker came in to pitch for the Rams in the fourth. Walker struck out Derek Boliek swinging for the first out. Drew Lowry bunted for a single up the third base line. Austin Reilly grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the Spider fourth. Eric Curtis walked to lead-off the bottom of the fourth. Joe Van Meter took a Matt Trent offering over the wall in left-center for a

two-run homer. Billy Falasco came in to replace Matt Trent. Falasco struck out M.L. Morgan. Richard Gonzalez grounded out to short. Jared Bolden singled to right but was thrown out by Ryan Grant trying to steal second to end the fourth. The Rams scored twice on two hits to lead 62 after four.

Joe White got the Spiders going in the fifth with a bunt single up the first base line. Hank Coogan flew out to right for the first out. Evan Stehle laced a shot into the right-center alley that rolled all the way to the fence. Stehle wound up at second while White scored. Ryan Metzroth singled to right as Stehle stopped at third. Ryan Grant singled to right to score Stehle and move Metzroth to third. Mike Mergenthaler’s groundout to first scored Metzroth and advanced Grant to second. Derek Boliek grounded out to short for the final out. The Spiders scored three runs on four hits to narrow the VCU lead to 6-5 after 4 1/2. R.J. Schenk grounded out to second for the first out in the bottom of the fifth. Austin Reilly made an impressive lunging stop of the grounder as he moved to his right to track down the ball and then threw out Schenk. Falasco struck out Kwan Evans looking for the second out. Chris Jackson struck out swinging but reached when his last swing was on a wild pitch that Ryan Grant could not get to first. Justin Wright grounded out to short for the final out. VCU led 6-5 after five.

Side-arming Robbie Andrews came on to throw for the Rams in the sixth. Drew Lowry grounded out to first. Austin Reilly grounded out to third. Joe White walked and stole second. Hank Coogan grounded out to short. Josh Horn came in to pitch for the Spiders. Eric Curtis struck out looking. Joe Van Meter walked. M.L. Morgan grounded into a 4-6-3 double play. The Spiders could not mount a threat in the seventh through ninth innings. The Spiders had one runner each of the last three innings but could not figure out Andrews. VCU put the game away in the eighth with five runs on four hits. Jared Bolden (three-run homer in the third) had a triple to knock-in two runs in the eighth. VCU won 11-5 as the Spiders dropped to 15-20-1 with the loss.

The Spiders and Rams both had 11 hits for the game. VCU had two homers, a double and one triple. Jared Bolden had five RBIs with a three-run homer and triple in his 3-5 game for the Rams. The Spiders could only manage one extra base hit: Evan Stehle’s double in the fifth. Ryan Grant led the Spiders with a 3-5 game at the plate with two RBIs. Ryan Metzroth had two hits for Richmond. Billy Falasco and Josh Horn combined to throw 3 1/3 innings of one hit ball with five strikeouts and only one walk. The Spiders return to Pitt Field on Friday for an important A-10 series with Rhode Island.
