ECOLE NATIONALE SUPERIEURE D’ARCHITECTURE DE PARIS LA
VILLETTE

INTRODUCING THE SCHOOL AND ITS PROSPECTS OF DEVELOPMENT
Born out of the criticism of the academic educational methods of the ex-department of
architecture of l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts (The Art school), Ecole d’Architecture de Paris la
Villette clearly underlined, from the very beginning in the founding texts in 1969, the two
major orientations in teaching : 1) the teaching of architecture should be accessible to all
students in a more explicite remodelled form, which would permit architectural an urban
culture to spread among the public ; 2) this teaching should not only have a professional
but university and interdisciplinary character – which explains the existence of research
activities. The present ENSAPLV, with a critical mass of about 2500 students, intends to
pursue this aim, adapting its prospects of development to the new conditions imposed by
the evolution of the society and the teaching staff.

THE TEACHING IDENTITY OF ECOLE D’ARCHITECTURE DE PARIS LA
VILLETTE
Teaching at ENSAPLV is :
Interdisciplinary (that is to say although the architectural, urban and landscape
project teaching occupies a central part in the course, other so called peripherical
subjects – human and social sciences, plastic arts, construction sciences, etc… - are
at the same time present and autonomous in order to reach the highest quality level.
It consists of lectures, review sessions, practical classes (TP) and tutorial classes
(TD) in specialized technical studios and not in “vertical studios”.
It meets the entire social demand concerning space development, regional
development and landscaping instead of only satisfying in a very narrow manner the
   “needs” of architectural firms.
It is supposed to be diverse and not pledged to a specific doctrine.
It permanently seeks reorientation confronted with other social, artistic etc…
   practices.
   It proposes high level teaching.
It deliberately takes a position on an international scale (semestrial courses after
   2002, credits, LMD).

ACCOMMODATION
The students of l’ENSAPLV are not given priority as concerns access to university halls of
residence. Or rather, the number of these halls of residence is not equal to the number of
students in Paris. The reason is that Architecture Schools are under the Ministry for
Culture and not the Ministry of Education.
It is extremely difficult to find, just the day before the start of the new academic year, the
flat of your dreams, not expensive, in a central neighbourhood, without being very lucky
and having a good knowledge of the French language.
So, do not hesitate to get in touch with the students at your home university
who have already had the experience of ERASMUS stay, and try to come
early before October.

The necessary documents :
The lease :
This agreement made between the tenant and the owner should list rules and terms of
your stay : the length of the lease, the starting point, the price of the rent and the service
charges ... Read the lease carefully before signing it, even if you have to do with a
professional (estate agent, managing agent ...) who presents a standard contract.

Inventory of fixtures
This document permits to describe the rented dwelling and the fixtures (sanitary fittings,
equipped kitchen....) when the tenant enters the dwelling and when he leaves it.
Comparing the two states, the owner can, if this is the case, ask for repairing of the
deteriorated elements. In the absence of this document, the tenant is presumed to have
received the dwelling in good condition and will be considered responsible for all the
repairs, even if the deterioration had taken place before his/her arrival.

Inventory of furniture
This document lists and describes the state of all the furniture put at the disposal of the
person renting a fully furnished accommodation. To be valid this inventory should be
written and signed by the two parties involved. It permits the owner to prove that the
concerned furniture is his/her property and to obtain repair if certain pieces of furniture
are damaged when the tenant leaves the accommodation. In return, it offers the tenant
the possibility to require that all furniture and fittings function.

                                                                                            7
The owner usually asks for a damage deposit which equals 1 or 2 months rent. This
deposit is refunded after the flat has been vacated and checked.

It sometimes happens that a guarantee of a third party is required, a person who
guarantee the payment of the rent in case the tenant is not in a position to do it. In case
you are financially supported by your parents you can show a letter indicating the amount
you are givens each month. The owner can ask for a specific letter from your parents in
which they commit themselves to paying the rent in case you fail to do so.
The rent is paid in advance that is to say on 1st of the month, and quite often a minimum
commitment of sixth months of stay.
If you obtain your accommodation through an estate agent’s office, they will ask for a
commission which can correspond to the amount of one month’s rent.

As soon as you have signed the accommodation contract, you should take an insurance
policy covering the damages you may cause to the dwelling.
For this purpose get in touch with : LMDE-centre 601 137, bd St Michel, 75006 Paris or
SMEREP 54, bd St Michel, 75006 Paris

HOUSING BENEFIT
You can have housing benefit by applying to the family allowance office.
Conditions : get a housing contract (for the co-tenants only one request can be made)
You can obtain information and the form by http://www.paris.caf.fr
