Announcements from the Career development centre The Duty Careers Adviser System Christmas Closure The Careers Service will be closed on Friday 23 December 2005 and will reopen on Thursday 5 January 2006. We operate a 'drop in' system - no appointment is necessary to see a careers adviser. Careers Advice is available – 10.00am – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday – no appointment necessary. Due to the nature of the system, there may be a waiting time at busy periods. Note: please call if travelling from a distance to make sure a careers advisor will be available. It lists PhD projects in chemical, physical, earth and life sciences that are currently available. NEW SCIENTIST – Postdocs Search all UK postdoc vacancies on NewScientistJobs.com Funding Scholarship British Federation of Woman Graduates Information The British Federation of Women Graduates has limited funds to make awards to women graduates undertaking postgraduate research in Great Britain (i.e. all of the United Kingdom except Northern Ireland). The webpage explains the arrangements for awards and scholarships made by the Academic Awards Committee of the BFWG on the basis of a criterion of academic excellence. These awards are made without reference to financial need. If you have a query about eligibility, contact the Secretary of BFWG, by email awards@bfwg.org.uk These bursaries provide support to enable undergraduates who are considering research as a career to work in a research laboratory during the summer vacation before their final year. The bursaries provide student support normally for a period between 6 and 8 weeks, plus a sum for research expenses. 274 bursaries were awarded in Summer 2005. Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund The trustees of of the Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund are pleased to announce the availability of funds for awards (£500 2500) to canadian men and women for the academic year commencing 2006. These awards are for academic and artistic studies in the UK and are exclusively for students who have already commenced their studies in the UK. To be eligible for a CCSF award , an applicant must be a Canadian citizen, be currently 16 March 2006 enrolled in a postgraduate programme. For further information and an application form visit www.canadianscholarshipfund.co.uk The Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York Scholarship 2005 Two Scholarships, each worth $20, 000, will be available in 2006. These awards, which are intended to assist with the cost of tuition fees, accommodation and travel, can be held at a University in the USA located within 250 miles of New York City or in Washington. Candidates are required to have a Scottish background, the Saint Andrew's Society expects its scholars to have a current knowledge of the Scottish tradition and be willing to act as good ambassadors from Scotland while they are in the United States. The Scholarships are open to students in any discipline who expect to graduate in the summer term of 2006 or who have graduated for the first time in 2005 from a Scottish University. For further details contact the Career Development Centre Wingate Scholarships 2006/07 Wingate Scholarships are awarded to individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake pioneering or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value, and to outstandingly talented musicians for advanced training. They are designed to help with the costs of a specific project which may last up to 3 years. The average total award is about £6,500 and the maximum in any one year is £10,000. There is no upper age limit and the Scholarship Committee welcomes applications from mature candidates and those from non-traditional academic backgrounds. Wingate Scholarships attempts to provide funding for cross-disciplinary projects that might not fall comfortably into any of the conventional funding categories. N. B. Previous recipients of Wingate Scholarships are not eligible to apply. The English Speaking Union – Lindermann Trust Fellowships Not Stated The fellowships are offered to graduates of exceptional promise in both the pure and applied Physical Sciences, who have shown the capacity for achieving original research. Fields of research will include Astronomy, Biophysics, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Mathematics and Physics. Closing date: Friday 28th October 2005 Fulbright British Friends of Harvard Business School MBA Awards: Two awards covering tuition fees only are offered for the first academic year of an MBA at Harvard Business School. Candidates must be able to demonstrate financial need. FRIDAY 3rd MARCH 2006 Fulbright Alistair Cooke Award in Journalism: An award in memory of the great trans-Atlantic commentator Alistair Cooke, it will cover maintenance and tuition fees for the first year of an MA in Journalism at the US university of the candidate’s choice. FRIDAY 4th NOVEMBER 2005 Fulbright-Robertson Visiting Professor in British History: This award enables a Senior or Junior lecturer to spend 10 months at Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri. The successful candidate will receive a grant of approximately $45,000, together with economy round-trip travel for him/herself and up to four accompanying dependants. FRIDAY 13th JANUARY 2006 Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Awards: Two awards of £15,000 are offered to postdoctoral academics or professionals to facilitate research and/or lecturing for a minimum of 10 months. Candidates must have an invitation from a leading US institution. FRIDAY 3rd MARCH 2006 Fulbright-AstraZeneca Research Scholarship: One award offered in conjunction with AstraZeneca for a postdoctoral scientist with an invitation to conduct research at a top centre in the US on an aspect of Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Bio-Informatics. The award is for a minimum of 10 months and is worth £15,000 plus economy round-trip travel. FRIDAY 3rd MARCH 2006 Fulbright Fellowship in Cancer Research: An award of $22,500 (inclusive of an allowance for travel) will be offered to enable a post-doctoral scientist or clinician to spend a minimum of 6 months in the United States. The successful candidate will carry out research or follow a course of study in the cancer field or combine the two. FRIDAY 3rd MARCH 2006 Fulbright Police Research Fellowships: Two awards beginning at £7,500, are available for serving UK Police Officers or Civilian Staff. Successful candidates must spend a minimum of 3 months in the United States developing their professional expertise and gaining experience of American policing. NUFFIELD FOUNDATION - The Oliver Bird Rheumatism Programme Trustees have committed the resources of the Oliver Bird Fund to the new Oliver Bird Rheumatism Programme for five years, to 2008. Please note that no other rheumatism grants are available during this time. The Programme offers 4 year PhD training programmes in the biosciences at five Collaborative Centres of excellence in rheumatic disease research.
