What is CATCH?
A Coordinated School Health Program designed to prevent sedentary behavior, poor dietary choices, and tobacco use at the elementary school level

CATCH Research Trial 1991-94
Research study was called the “Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health” First research trial to integrate school, child & family Ethnically diverse population Four geographic areas of the U.S. – California – Louisiana – Minnesota – Texas Large number of schools (N=96)

Menu Planning
CATCH Eat Smart Guidelines = USDA/School Meal Initiative (SMI) requirements – 30% kcal from fat, < 10% from saturated fat – Sodium reduction Guidebook offers menu planning suggestions – Criteria for fat content of foods and vendor products – Menu modification suggestions – Salad bar suggestions – Ideas for healthier a la carte, school stores and vending machines Guidebook contains 58 recipes

Food Purchasing
Pre-prepared foods from vendors (e.g. pizza and hamburger patties) Produce/milk/other foods & ingredients Commodities – supplied by Govt.
– fruits and vegetables; meats; cheese or dry
and canned beans; fruit juices; vegetable shortening and vegetable oils; peanut products; and others – Bonus commodities –dried fruit, applesauce, turkey, frozen apricots

Food Preparation
Preparation Techniques
– Bake potato products instead of frying – Use non-stick coating spray or pan liners instead of greasing pans – Reduce or eliminate fat and sodium added to pasta, vegetables, and rice – Defat ground beef – Make changes one step at a time

Promotion
Anything that integrates PE, classroom, or family with nutrition!! – Cafeteria tours – Posting Go/Slow/Whoa signs on cafeteria line – Students/teachers participate in menu planning – Taste testing/free samples – Have students design nutrition wall art, make posters – partner with teachers – Cafeteria staff cooks vegetables students grow in a garden

Does CATCH Work?
Reduced total fat and saturated fat content of school lunches. Increased moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during P.E. classes. Improved students’ self-reported eating and physical activity behaviors. Effects persisted over three years without continued intervention.

The Illinois CATCH Program
A new initiative by the Illinois Department of Public Health Debuted in January 2004 Currently 19 schools funded with approximately 6000 students participating Approximately 100 CATCH team members have been trained in the schools

Criteria for Selection of Schools
Current obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular health, and environmental program efforts within the community Previously funded for CATCH from the Illinois Health and Wellness Initiative in 1999 An expressed interest in CATCH Geographical distribution within the state

Self-Assessment and Planning
Each CATCH school is required to complete the CDC “School Health Index” Schools are required to complete a CATCH school action plan

TRAINING
Provided by certified CATCH trainers One day in length Minimum team of 4 from each school must attend

Evaluation
SOFIT (System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time)
– Used to determine the level of activity in the physical
education classes – Observations occur before CATCH training to provide baseline levels – Repeated 6 mo. to 1 year after implementation – Performed by certified SOFIT observers

Future of the IL CATCH Program
Will continue in the pilot phase for the 2005-2006 school year Dependant upon funding, additional schools will be added in the fall of 2005 IDPH will assist with training of schools securing outside funding (other than IDPH) for full CATCH implementation

Model Wellness Policies
CATCH schools are well on the way towards adoption of a wellness policy.
– The CATCH program promotes children’s health and
well-being. – The CATCH team is a good starting point for development of a school health council. – Completion of the School Health Index also provides documentation of the school’s current nutrition and physical activity environments and plans for improvements.
