                         the MCR President
A big welcome to Hughes Hall!

Hughes Hall is the oldest graduate college
in Cambridge, with a history of pioneering
in the provision of education to women teachers. It is now known
for its diverse community with a plethora of nationalities and
academic subjects covered by its members. Having been founded
in 1885, the college will be celebrating its 125th year of excellence
next year.

College makes a big difference, both socially and academically,
and allows you to develop valuable personal skills.
As a student member of Hughes Hall, you are automatically a
member of the Hughes Hall Middle Combination Room
(MCR). The MCR is a student organization that provides a student
representative to the College Council, and who lobbies the College,
on your behalf, to provide adequate facilities and support. It also
gives you opportunities to socialize and enjoy your time in
Cambridge by organising a wide range of events, be it tea and
cakes gatherings, parties, seminars or anything you may suggest.
The MCR can also help you with any difficulties you may face
during your year(s) at Hughes Hall. Its priority is to make you feel
at home, so do not ever hesitate to contact the MCR committee if
needed.

Remember it is you who have the power to make the best of your
time at Hughes Hall! Help to create a nice and dynamic
atmosphere by participating in events, bringing new ideas and
getting involved in the MCR and let us work together to make this
year a bright and memorable one!

MCR Bar and Clubroom
A genuine focal point for the college and all Hughesians is the
MCR Clubroom. It is located at the north-west end of the Margaret
Wileman building.

The MCR clubroom is open 24 hours a day, and is great for reading,
relaxing, watching TV and meeting friends. The bar is open nightly
from 8:00 pm until midnight. It is also the home of the infamous
Hughes Hall Bops, which feature dancing, special offers, fancy
dress, themed shenanigans and, sometimes, live music.

May Ball

May Week takes place in June and lasts about ten days, after
exams are over. Hence, it no longer merits either word in its
name. The end of exams is a cause for heavy celebration
amongst the students of the University

A May ball is a formal event, requiring evening dress, held in
the college grounds. It starts around 9pm and continues until
well after dawn when, following breakfast, a survivor’s photo is
taken.

This year marks the 125th anniversary of Hughes Hall and we
invite you to join in the celebration at the Hughes Hall May Ball
2010!

Introduction

Contrary to the prevalent misconception about Cambridge students,
they are not trapped under books and papers, but are very sociable
and joyful!

Here at Hughes Hall, we offer you a wide variety of activities to
enrich your Cambridge experience. We have something to cheer
you up and make you feel at home, be it punting, football, poker,
weekly tea and cakes gatherings, film nights, seminars, etc...
This closely-knitted community of Hughes Hall is what we cherish
here! So, do not stay in your room or in the library all day long!
Make sure to give yourself some time to socialise and have fun.
Rugby (Dominic Silk djs213)
It is also known as the gentlemen's
game. If you fancy great teamwork
spirit and competitiveness, then
Hughes Hall rugby squad has a
place for you. Hughes Hall has a
great reputation of strong rugby
squad. This year we have managed

cuppers. So, if you are up for it, do
come and join us!

Football (Chris Jeppensen cj259)

Hey! Welcome to the land of football. Hughes Hall football team is
the team to play with. We have strong and committed team players
and we are progressively moving up the league table by finishing
third in the league despite being a newcomer. On top of that, we are
the runner-up of the MCR Shield (UEFA) cup this year. This shows
you we mean business. In the coming academic year, we aim to do
better than before. If you would like to join the team, do contact us!
 Hughes Hall Boat Club
Men: Josh Welensky (jw583) Women: Tiffanny Morris (tjm42)

Rowing in Cambridge is definitely one of the most
unforgettable experiences. At Hughes, you have the
chance to put on the sleek Hughes top and row along the
river cam. There are rowing tournaments all year round,
and the most famous ones are the Bumps. In the recent
May bump 2009, our college has unprecedentedly won
three blades in the prestigious event, and was awarded
         the Pegasus cup.

The college has won a total of 14 blades in the
history of the Boat Club and is still counting. Besides the
bump, our college has started to venture out to
participate in other competitions outside Cambridge; one
of these was the Henley Regatta. Although regular
training can be demanding, the experience and the joy
are simply rewarding. So, if you fancy the real
Cambridge boating experience and wish to add to the
glory of Hall of Fame, do join us!
Cricket Safwan Akram (msa40)

Playing cricket in the UK is really
                                    enjoyable. In the summer, the
Fenners cricket ground will be the
                                    center of attraction for the
                                    university league cricket games.
Here in Hughes, you get the
chance to play with many good
players. If you wish to learn more
about the game or the club, do
contact us and join our practice
                                    session.

would like to bring our team to a greater height please come and

cool friends in the team.

Darts Edward Greenwood (ejdg2)

The Hughes Hall darts team was formed in 07/08 approximately
one week before the start of that year’s league. We couldn't play
darts at the time, but we didn't feel that should stop us competing.
Come along if you have ever played or want to play darts, whether
you are interested in joining the college team or just want to have a
few drinks and/or throw sharp things. Also, yes it is a real sport.
Chess Arjun Jain (aj333)

formed in 2007, but within two years they have moved up from
