Troubleshooting Common Errors in XML Spy
This quick reference guide will list some common mistakes or errors that occur when
using XML Spy and StyleVision and help you move past them. Please note: This list is
not comprehensive and is in its draft form
The File Is Not Well Formed
Sometimes a tag gets left out or the information between an opening and closing tag do
not match up.
With the .xml file open in Text view, look through the code for any missing opening or
closing tags, (<>, </>). If none are missing, make sure that for every open tag (e.g.
<xs:element> </xs:elemnt>), there is a matching closing tag.
The File Is Not Valid
You need to assign a style sheet first before you try to open the file as an .xml file.
Unable To Show Schema
The file needs to be saved as an xsd file first and then cross-referenced through
Files Won’t Cross-reference
While attempting to open .xsd, .xml and .sps files the files would attempt to link up to the
Host files (Dr. Barker’s).
Go into the XML source code and hand-code the file reference as a local linkage.
XML Spy Associating The Wrong .sps File
To associate a new .sps file with an .xml file, use the button on the opening screen that
says, “Select a STYLEVISION stylesheet…”
