Serverbased Computing

ThinPrint for SAP and Unix users

ThinPrint announces the .print Host Integration
Service for Microsoft Terminal Services and Citrix
MetaFrame.
(Berlin, March 2005) Many businesses that run Microsoft
Terminal Services or Citrix MetaFrame use the platform to
access SAP and Unix applications. When the print data isn’t
created on the terminal or MetaFrame server, though, it can’t
even be sent with the ICA or RDP protocol to the client, much
less be optimized or compressed.

Many of the advantages of a server based architecture could
therefore not be used with SAP and UNIX applications. Home users,
mobile employees, users in remote offices, and even users at HQ
could only print with a very high level of administrative work, if they
could print at all. The new .print Host Integration Service has changed
that.

If a user starts a print job from SAP or Unix, the .print Host Integration
Service first identifies the terminal or MetaFrame server on which that
user is working. From there, the print data is compressed and sent
across controlled bandwidth via the RDP or ICA protocol to the client
machine, which decompresses the data and sends it on to the local
printer. “The .print Host Integration Service resolves a serious, long
recognized printing problem in server based architectures,” states
Carsten Mickeleit, Managing Director at ThinPrint.

The .print Host Integration Service is planned to be available for the
CeBIT 2005 (hall 3, stand C 31). A beta version is available for
download at www.thinprint.com/free-demo.htm.
