Today, he is a symbol of the aerial refueling community, a community of pilots and boom operators who fly airborne "gas stations" and deliver millions of gallons of fuel to thousands of aircraft every year. According to Air Force Doctrine: "Air refueling, when properly employed, enhances, enables and multiplies the strategic, operational and tactical effects of any air operation." According to the Combined Air Operations Center, from 2004 to 2007, tankers flew 53,518 sorties and offloaded more than three billion pounds of fuel to more than 121,000 aircraft.
