Thornton challenges such claims both by exposing factual errors or ideological wishful-thinking behind them, and by moving the focus of analysis away from individual behavior change or psychology to broad social networks. Rather, the key factor is change in large-scale sexual networks (the unimagined or secret connections between people who share multiple sexual partners over time).
