After approaching John Drewry, the dean of the University of Georgia's Grady School (later the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication), about sponsoring the award, the first ceremony, broadcast live nationally by CBS, was held in New York on March 29, 1941 . Since its inception, the award selection process has been conducted by a panel of distinguished broadcast scholars, critics, and media professionals.
