There are a lot of different types of coaches and don’t get sold by the big picture of having a great life or being successful. Look at the program and ask yourself, “Are the details of this program addressing my specific needs?” Third: You need to find a coach that has experience, knowledge and expertise to help you with your specific needs. Before you contact a coach. Write down what you want to achieve with a coach. What you are looking for that coach to help you with. This is not a character assessment of your weaknesses, but of what you are looking to create. Remember the top performers don’t use coaches because they are bad at something, they use coaches to get better and to stay on top. You may need a coach either to actual teach you skills or work with you in partnership to stay focused. The right coach will help you develop and achieve a plan to create the results you want either in business, management, turning a business around, learning a skill, relationships, performing, physical goals, goal setting skills, turning failures to successes. To find the right coach and for the coach to help you achieve your goals, know what you are looking to achieve. If you really are not sure, but know you need to get into action, discuss with a potential coach how he or she would get started. Forth: Ask questions. When you know your goals and are interviewing coaches, ask about their experience with your needs. • • • • • • • • • What their approach would be. How often you world work with the coach. What period of time do they expect to work with you to achieve results. How often they will be available to you. Ask for specific examples of successes related to your needs. Ask for testimonials. Ask to speak with people they have worked with. Ask if the coach will provide you with action plans. Ask how long they have been coaching. Fifth: You need to feel comfortable. One of the most important elements of any therapeutic relationship whether it a coach, therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist or other is how that person makes you feel and how you relate to each other. The best and most experienced coach may not be the right one for you if you don’t feel comfortable and can not relate to that person. You need to feel confident in the relationship. You are putting your trust in to this person to understand you and motivate you to achieve. The process requires that you are willing to be vulnerable and tell the coach the truth. If you don’t feel comfortable you won’t be honest and you won’t get the results you want, not because the coach is not a good coach, but because the coach is not the right coach for you. When you are choosing a coach ask yourself, “Do I feel comfortable?” “Is this a person I can see myself opening up to and motivating me to get into action and achieve the results I want?" This might take a couple of sessions for you to figure out. Bottom line, “TRUST YOURSELF!” If it doesn’t feel right to you, don’t be afraid to switch. In fact a good coach should be able to make recommendations to you based on the sessions you have had of a coach that might be better for you. So if you are ready to make changes and start living life to your potential look into finding a coach. The right coach will help you make the transformation in your life and achieve the results you want. The most important goal to a good coach is not securing you as a client, but in helping you achieve your personal successes, even if with another coach. Coaches get into the business of coaching because they have a passion to help people achieve success and live happier healthier lives. “I wish you the best in your journey to the life you want!” About The Author As a life coach, Devlyn has made helping people find ways to improve their lives his personal mission and passion.
