Essex County Council, in partnership with Abbey Corporate Banking, a UK subsidiary of Santander, has recently announced a L30 million loan and overdraft scheme to help some of the 50,000 businesses in the county. "Banking on Essex" is the first major municipal banking scheme to be created since 1915. Loans and overdrafts of up to L100,000 will be available for eligible Essex businesses employing less than 250 people with a turnover of less than L25 million and who have been trading for at least 12 months.
