A few astute leaders of the Cold War Army, however, knew that the human dimension of warfare was scarcely modified by technological innovation, and they advocated study of performance in actual battles as a proper supplement to more theoretical classroom exercises. When we turn back the clock, the characteristics of an earlier generation's wars - organizational structure, doctrine, weapons, and the backgrounds and capabilities of senior leaders - are different, so the staff ride leader issues some sort of "battle book" to help everyone understand those details as they apply to the campaign under review.
