At Online Educa in Berlin last December the author made the decision to undertake a three month trial of Twitter. Twitter is a microblogging tool that allows you to post very short messages to others who have chosen to follow you and to receive messages from those who you have chosen to follow. The messages are entirely textual, but often include links to pictures and Web pages. The messages, which are called tweets, can contain tags, essentially descriptive labels that allow messages relating to a particular event or topic to be aggregated. As a learning and development professional it is obligatory to ask whether Twitter has potential as a learning tool. Nor is it likely to be as helpful in locating and sharing expertise as an enterprise social networking tool.
